12-13-17 — Woodland Students Display the Wonder of Kindness

Dec. 13, 2017 ~ “In a world where you can be anything, be kind,” read the shirts of all Woodland Elementary staff and students. As part of their continual focus on demonstrating kindness by taking care of one another, Wonder Week was held Nov. 13-17.

The inspiration for the week came from the recently released movie, “Wonder,” where a boy with facial differences enters a mainstream elementary for the first time. A book by the same name was the inspiration for the movie.

“Our school community has always focused on supporting the different student needs and providing a learning environment that is inclusive to all students,” Woodland Principal Stacy Shipley said. “We want our students to recognize that no matter their age, they can make a difference in our community.”

Leading up to the kindness-themed week, intermediate students read the book “Wonder” by Raquel J. Palacio while primary students enjoyed reading the companion book, “We’re All Wonders.” The Woodland PTO purchased the books for each classroom.

Woodland staff members created age-appropriate activities that provided students the opportunity to learn and practice kindness in school and the community. Each day during Wonder Week was cause for a theme and a different kindness challenge; whether it be helping a neighbor, writing a positive note or simple random acts of kindness. Students and staff members even provided donuts for school bus drivers to show appreciation.

Third-grade students created a kindness pledge and challenged their parents to sign as role models of kindness.

At the conclusion of Wonder Week, students shared their experiences with parents and guests during a Kindness Exhibition that was held at school.

On Saturday, Nov. 18, all Woodland families were invited to see the movie “Wonder” on opening weekend.
