Summer School Programs

  • Elementary (K-4) and Middle School (Grades 5-7)

    Summer Academy for elementary and middle school students is by district invitation only. Students invited by the district to participate in Summer Academy must have attended the Olathe Public Schools during the regular school year and have state and local achievement scores in reading and math that indicate the need for remedial instruction. Invitations are distributed each year at February parent-teacher conferences. Enrichment classes are not offered in the summer. Classes will be held Monday-Thursday from June 3-25. (ELL students in first through eighth grades may be invited to attend Summer Academy if they meet the district criteria.)

    Driver's Education

    Driver's education is offered in the summer at various high schools. Twelve hours of driving experience and 34 hours of classroom instruction are included in each session. Session one is May 29 through June 20 at Olathe East and North high schools. Session two is June 24 through July 23 at Olathe South and West high schools. Students must have turned 14 by Jan. 1, 2019 to apply for the 2019 summer program. For more information, call Kraig Taylor at (913) 780-7125.

    Summer 2020 Weight Training and Conditioning (Grades 6-12)

    Weight training is a four-week program open to boys and girls who were enrolled in sixth through 12th grade during the 2019-20 school year in the Olathe School District. Sessions will be held at all high schools and middle schools, Monday through Thursday, with dates set by individual schools. Jenny Steele,, is director of the summer weights and fitness program.

    eAcademy (online learning)

    Summer eAcademy will offer a limited selection of courses for advanced placement students who acquire counselor permission. Counselors have fliers and information is available on the eAcademy website ( or by contacting Randy Warner, eAcademy facilitator, (913) 780-7110. Sessions are from June 4 through July 26.

    Special Education

    Eligibility for enrollment in the extended school year is individually determined by each student’s IEP team. Contact your child’s IEP case manager if you have questions about your child’s eligibility for ESY. Questions about ESY programs should be directed to Heidi Schneider at (913) 780-7321.
