5-2-25 — Board Considers Proposal for K-8 Alternative Education Site for 2026-27

May 2, 2025 ~ At the May 2025 Board of Education meeting, district administration shared a proposal to repurpose Westview Elementary for the 2026-27 school year, transitioning the building from a traditional elementary school to an alternative education site serving students in grades K-8 districtwide. The board will review the recommendation and is scheduled to take formal action on this proposal at the July meeting. (View the full presentation from the board meeting on our district YouTube page.)

This proposal follows a detailed report on declining enrollment trends at the April Board meeting and its impact on the district, including Westview.

What does this mean?

If approved, the current Westview boundaries would be realigned for the 2026-27 school year and students would attend another elementary school in the district, which will be determined in early first semester through community meetings and discussions with the Board of Education. Westview would continue to operate as normal for the upcoming 2025-26 school year.

This proposal is not one made lightly, and the district is committed to being transparent, honoring Westview’s legacy, and ensuring a smooth transition for students, families, and staff.

Why is this proposal being considered?

This decision is being considered due to steadily declining enrollment — a trend affecting schools across our district and beyond. Currently, Westview serves 158 students. Since 2015, Westview’s enrollment has dropped by 40%, with further declines projected.

After careful consideration, the district believes repurposing the campus would provide a fiscally responsible solution to address declining enrollment, as well as a valuable opportunity for us to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment that serves all students in Olathe. This new approach would offer a space where students with behavioral challenges could thrive academically, socially, and emotionally and provide more tailored educational opportunities that better support the needs of our entire student population moving forward.

Next Steps

The Board is scheduled to take formal action on the proposal in July. If approved, community meetings will be held in the fall with Westview families regarding boundaries and how this change will impact them. In addition, district administration will meet with staff to discuss the process to secure employment opportunities within the district moving forward, as we are committed to finding placements for all current staff.

We will continue to share updates and support the Westview community every step of the way to make this process as smooth as possible.
