(Oct. 16, 1948 — )
Mike’s 32-year career in commercial insurance was one of many ways he served the community. During his career and in retirement, he served Olathe’s children and adults as a sports coach, hospital board member, and community service organization leader. Mike joined the Olathe Health System board of trustees in 2000, and served as its chairman from 2009-12. Through the years he helped lead a handful of its key committees. Mike coached boys and girls in the Olathe Soccer Clubs Premier division for more than a dozen years, leading his teams to multiple local, regional and state championships. His involvement in the Olathe Noon Optimist Club included serving as its president for 1982-83. He also co-founded the club’s foundation which provides scholarships to Olathe high school seniors and co-chairs its childhood cancer golf tournament. Mike also started what would later become the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, and launched the dictionary donation program benefiting all fourth-graders in Olathe. In 2005 he was only the fourth Federated Insurance marketing representative to receive its Chairman’s Career Award.
