Code of Student Conduct

  • Code of Student Conduct
The OPS Code of Student Conduct provides thorough guidelines covering student obligations of academic honesty and integrity and disciplinary procedures, and is fully applicable to the eAcademy program. eAcademy further emphasizes and clarifies the following obligations.

    Consequences for Violation of Policy
The eAcademy Code of Student Conduct and Olathe Schools Code of Student Conduct should be adhered to with no exceptions. Actions deviant from these guidelines can result in the following actions.

    • First Offense: The student will be given a warning. If plagiarism occurs, no credit will be given for plagiarized assignments. Parents and counselors and/or administrators will be notified of the infraction.
    • Second Offense: The student may be removed from the course with a failing grade and no credit awarded. Access to online courses offered through eAcademy may also be revoked. The student’s principal and counselor at their home high school will be notified and the high school may apply additional consequences.
    • Severe Misconduct: If the misconduct is deemed to be severe, the student may be removed from the course with no credit, regardless of whether the offense is first or repeated, and may be subject to further school-level or district-level disciplinary action.

Proper Use of Technology and Materials
Olathe Public Schools Technology Acceptable Use Policies direct the proper use of computers and the Internet. All materials in eAcademy courses are copyrighted and provided for use exclusively by enrolled students. Copying or reprinting these materials for use by or distribution to others is prohibited unless expressly noted. Click here to access the school district's Acceptable Use Policy.

Expectations for Student Participation in Zoom Meetings

    • Conduct yourself appropriately for the setting. Keep on topic and on task. Do not be a distraction with attention-seeking behaviors.
    • Keep your microphone muted by default to eliminate background noise. Enable your microphone if you need to speak, then click off when your part is complete.
    • If the instructor is asking students to use video and you are sensitive about being on video in the group, try using a virtual background or ask your instructor if it is acceptable to turn your video feed off for privacy.
    • Follow the instructor’s instructions for how and when it is appropriate to use chat, and use it appropriately only in a manner that contributes to the purpose of the meeting.
    • Set your “name” on your Zoom tile. Instructors will expect that you use your first name or first and last names so that they get to know you and are aware of who is participating. Do not set a silly or distracting name for yourself.

    Plagiarism
Our definition of plagiarism is: Copying or imitating the language, ideas, and thoughts of another writer and claiming them to be your own original work. Specific examples of plagiarism that will not be tolerated include but are not limited to:

    • Generating answers using artificial intelligence applications (such as ChatGPT) and submitting them as your personal work.
    • Copying from another’s assignments, essays, or tests regardless of whether answers are provided in print, electronically, or verbally.
    • Accepting answers from others on non-group assignments such that the work was not completed independently by the student as required.
    • Failing to acknowledge a source when repeating another’s wording or particularly apt phrase, paraphrasing another’s argument, or presenting another’s line of thinking.
    • Making slight changes in wording from another source so that the passage is not copied word for word, but the source is not acknowledged.
    • Sharing your work with others so that they can copy, regardless of whether answers are provided in print, electronically, or verbally; this is prohibited. Remember, this is a secure electronic class; others cannot gain access to your work unless you give it to them.
    • (The consequences for plagiarism are outlined in the Consequences section above.)

eAcademy takes the issue of plagiarism very seriously and uses multiple strategies to detect plagiarism including Turn-It-In, Google, artificial intelligence, and learning management system tools. It's easy to avoid plagiarizing - just do your own work. Do not share answers with others or borrow answers from friends. Do not work collaboratively on assignments that should be your original work. And do not copy text from other published works, especially websites.

Before awarding assignment credit, instructors may require a Zoom meeting with the student to discuss submitted coursework. If the student is unable to explain or answer questions regarding the work the student may not receive credit until they re-do and resubmit such work.

    Netiquette

Appropriate behavior is expected while online. The word "netiquette" refers to common-sense guidelines for communicating with others online through email, discussion boards and forums, or other electronic messages. Messages to teachers and other students must demonstrate respectful language, attitudes, and behaviors. Disrespectful written communication is unacceptable, as is disrespectful oral communication, and will not be tolerated. Here are a few guidelines.

    • Respect privacy. Do not publicly post your personal contact information or anyone else's, such as addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, etc.
    • Messages must not contain insults or attacks against another person, obscene, degrading, or profane language, harassment, threats, or derogatory comments.
    • Use complete sentences, whole words (not chat shorthand), and proper punctuation. Avoid sarcasm, jargon, and slang.
    • Focus your responses on the questions or issues being discussed, not on individuals.
    • Be constructive with your criticism, not hurtful.
    • Review your messages before sending them. Remove easily misinterpreted language and proofread for typos.
    • Don't broadcast online discussions, and never reveal other people's that you might have access to.
