eAcademy Startup Instructions

Welcome to Summer eAcademy!
Below are the instructions that will take you through the startup and Orientation pages, all seen on the left navigation menu. Follow step by step, reading in sequence through the information exactly as it is given, and you won't get lost.
We want to highlight that you are the FIRST students in Olathe to use Canvas! We're excited that eAcademy will be piloting the district's new Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) this summer. This upgrade replaces Moodle, providing a more user-friendly experience for students. Our teachers have been working diligently to prepare for this transition. The district plans a phased implementation of Canvas across all classrooms this coming school year, culminating in full adoption by Fall 2026. Communication will be key to our success if any glitches come up, so be sure to check your Canvas messages daily! Please pay attention to the Canvas login instructions on the Canvas page!
Here's What to Do
-
May 28 is the start date for the required eAcademy Orientation, which is completely online and takes a couple of hours. Orientation is not optional (see message below for health) and students who do not complete the Orientation will be removed from the eAcademy program. Please complete the Orientation BEFORE midnight June 1. If you are unable to meet that deadline, you must contact Mrs. McDonald and ask for more time to avoid being removed from the eAcademy program.
June 2 is the start date for your online course. You need to attend a required course Zoom/Teams meeting(s) with your teacher. Information is below, so please look and put a reminder in your phone to attend.
Instructions for PE and Health:
- PE and Health are separate .50 courses. Students can take either PE or Health (or both in summer session only), as advised by their counselor.
- PE students received a separate email with instructions to pick up their Polar monitor, complete setup, and have a practice workout uploaded before the required PE course Zoom meeting on course start day. Use the print instructions that came with your Polar monitor. Click here to see a summary of the steps online. PE students will have assignments in Canvas and upload workouts to Polar.
- Health students will get a separate email with special instructions and your Edgenuity login for your health course. (Health is non-physical; there are no workouts for Health.) Health will be completed in Edgenuity. There is nothing in Canvas for the Health course.
- Startup requirements:
- PE students must complete the orientation, whether just taking PE, or both PE and health.
- Students taking only Health and no other courses will NOT complete the orientation. Continue reading and follow only the instructions that apply to health.
All courses (except Health): Here are the steps to complete the required Orientation, online, on your own:
- Continue reading this page of instructions. At the bottom you will be directed to the next page of General Information.
- After reading that page, you will click on the correct button (A) Taking eAcademy Courses or (B) The Health Course in Edgenuity, to continue. (Students taking Health and any other course will read both.)
- Then continue through the remaining Orientation pages. It takes a couple of hours to read and understand the information.
- The Orientation ends with a Working in Canvas page that will ask you to log in to Canvas (where your eAcademy course is found). In Canvas you will take a short quiz demonstrating that you completed the Orientation.
And that's it. All the pages are in order step by step and if you can follow written instructions you can't get lost.
Zoom/Teams Class Meetings - All Students (including Health):
- June 2 is start day and all students will need to attend a required Zoom/Teams class meeting with your instructor either that day at 6:30 pm or 7:30 pm, or at the alternative times offered by the instructor; some are earlier or later! If you have more than one class, please attend one Zoom/Teams at the early time and the other at the later time. If you miss your virtual class meeting, you will need to contact your instructor to ask what options there are for makeup. Do not contact the eAcademy office. Your instructor’s information can be found in your Canvas course.
- Links for your virtual meeting with days and times are found in your Canvas course (or Health - emailed to you). Please put a reminder in your phone so you don't miss your meeting.
- Parents are encouraged and welcome to sit with their student and listen in on the meeting. However, parents should not join as a participant in course meetings.
- PE and Health are separate .50 courses. Students can take either PE or Health (or both in summer session only), as advised by their counselor.

The online startup and Orientation are very detailed and contain all the information you need to get started in your course. Your success depends on your ability to read and follow written instructions – a fundamental skill that is crucial to being an online student. A hint before you move on - use Chrome or Firefox only, no other browsers. We wish you luck and a great semester!
You are now ready to continue. Scroll back up and to the navigation menu (top left) and go on to the next page.
Parent Notes
-
Parents,
We encourage parents to review the startup web pages just as students do. Here are some other hints:
- eAcademy piloted the Canvas Learning Management System this past summer. We had a great roll-out were able to quickly resolve any issues that came up. We also piloted the parent portal to provide access to their students' Canvas courses. More information will be sent about this after the semester begins.
- Teachers will conduct virtual meetings with students. Only the course startup Zoom/Teams meeting is required. Subsequent course meetings will be for student reviews, question sessions, discussions, etc - highly encouraged but not required. Parents are welcome to sit with their students during these meetings and listen in, but parents should not join as participants.
- There are no live lectures or classroom hours.
- Courses are graded and there is a timeline of due dates published in each course. Students may work offline and do not have to be in Canvas every day. Students may work ahead.
- Student course gradebooks are in their course and parents will have gradebook access through the Canvas parent portal. Students should check their course gradebook regularly for grades and teacher feedback. [There is an exception to this rule when the course is contained in an adopted textbook site.]
- There is a required PE safety acknowledgment that must be completed by the student AND a parent/guardian. Your PE student will have instructions, and you can find them by clicking the link on the PE Advisory page on the left menu.
- Configuring the Polar monitors for PE is a detailed process. Click here for complete instructions if needed to support your student.
- Students should self-advocate and make contacts with their instructor and eAcademy and not ask parents to email on their behalf. Students are encouraged to CC their parents in emails. Certainly, parents can email the instructor or eAcademy with sensitive or confidential information or questions as needed.
- We have created a page of expectations for parents. Click here to see that page
