The Olathe Public Schools offer state-approved driver's education courses that meet either in an after-school or summer school format. The program emphasizes defensive driving and the social responsibility of driving. Successful completion of this course, plus additional driving experience, will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license if they are 16 years old, or a restricted license if they are 15 years old, once all requirements are met.
A current instructional permit is required for enrollment.
Students must be at least 14.5 years old by the first class. It is required that students have their "instructional permit" (IP) from the state of Kansas before enrolling in the class. Priority for enrollment will be given to older students. Driving experience with a parent is recommended prior to the start of class. The enrollment form is shown below.
Classes meet on Monday from 5-7 p.m. with one hour of driving time approximately every other day btween 4-8 p.m. Successful completion of the class allows students a one-half credit hour on their transcript.
There will be one session per year at four high schools. Enrollment is limited to students from that high school. Enrollment will be selected chronologically with the oldest students being enrolled first. Any unfilled positions will be taken from other high schools serving oldest students first. It is recommended that students needing additional classroom assistance (reading and/or test-taking) participate in the summer program.
The cost is $300 payable by cash or check (no credit cards) and due at registration prior to the first day of class. Successful completion of the course plus additional driving experience will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license or restricted license (depending on their age and length of time they've held a permit). Students are required to have their instructional permit from the state of Kansas before registration will be allowed. It must be current and not expired.
Some driving experience with a parent prior to the state of class is also recommended.
Parents will be notified by email if their student has been selected for the program from information provided on our online registration process. Selection is based upon the child's birth date, with oldest students first.
Sessions are also offered in June and July. Information for the summer sessions will be available around April 1, 2020.
