Summer Driver Education

  • Thank you for your interest in summer driver’s education. The July 2020 class is now full and we can no longer take applications. We will offer after-school classes beginning in September. Check this webpage in August for information.

Driver education classes will be offered in July. The emphasis is on defensive driving and the social responsibilities of driving. Successful completion of this course enables the student to pursue a Kansas drivers license or a restricted license. (14 year olds may only obtain an instructional permit.) You must have turned 14 years old by Jan. 1, 2020, to apply for the program. Students with a birth date of Jan. 1, 2006 through June 1, 2006 may be considered on a space available basis.

Morning and afternoon classes will be offered at Olathe East High School and students from all Olathe secondary schools are invited to attend. Session times are 8-10 a.m. or 1-3 p.m. Driving times rotate between 7-11:30 a.m. for the morning session and between 12:30-4 p.m. for the afternoon session. Students will drive every second or third day for a total of 12 times and may occasionally drive during an hour of class. (Please check your calendar carefully as attendance is mandatory. Students may not miss more than two days.) Due to the tight schedule of this summer session, additional drive times may be scheduled on the weekends or evenings.

Classes are offered July 6-28 at Olathe East.

    Class Fees

The program fee is $300 payable by credit card, cash or check. Each session equates to one semester half-unit of practical and consumer studies. This credit will be on the student’s transcript, but it will not appear on the grade card.

    Registration Procedure

The application will only be available on this website. We will assign schedules chronologically by birth date (oldest students first). The final process of enrollment (completing paperwork, eye tests, acquiring schedules and paying fees by cash, check or credit card) will take place in the commons area of Olathe East High School, 14545 W. 127th St. (127th and Black Bob Road) on the following date:

    • Wednesday, July 1 for morning or afternoon session. Registration time will be emailed to each student to help maintain social distancing during the registration process.

Students must be present to complete paperwork at this time. They should bring their glasses or contacts for an eye test or their current driving permit if they have one. It is highly recommended that students acquire an instructional permit (IP) before the class begins.

If you have questions, please email Kraig Taylor at or email Renee Amos at

    Class and Driving Restrictions

Students must stay home when they are ill. Prior to coming to class or to drive, students will be asked the following questions. If they answer yes to any question, they must go home and contact Mr. Taylor.

    • Do you have a temperature over 100.4 degrees?
    • Do you have symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath?
    • Have you visited any of the restricted travel advisory locations listed on the Centers for Disease Control website or Kansas Department of Health and Environment website within the past 14 days?
    • Have you had close contact with anyone in the past 14 days who has been diagnosed with COVID-19?
