Illness/Bereavement Leave

Illness/Bereavement Leave is defined as days of absence due to personal or immediate family illness or injury. Immediate family members are defined as the employee's spouse, children, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, grandchildren, as well as the parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren of the employee's spouse. No deduction from the employee's regular income is deducted for an illness/bereavement leave day. An employee absent for more than three consecutive days may be required to provide a doctor's note indicating the nature of the illness. Unused illness/bereavement leave carries over each year. At retirement, employees may be eligible to convert unused illness/bereavement leave into an HRA Account. For more information, refer to the retirement tab above.
- 9-month employees receive 12 days per year
- 10-month employees receive 13 days per year
- 11-month employees receive 14 days per year
- 12-month employees receive 15 days per year
Bereavement Leave

Bereavement Leave is defined as days of absence due to the death of an immediate family member. An immediate family member includes a parent, grandparent, spouse, sibling, child, spouse's parent, spouse's siblings, spouse's child. Olathe Public Schools grants up to five bereavement leave days per year at no deduction to an employee's regular income or sick leave accrual time. To apply for bereavement leave, complete the online Bereavement Leave Form.
One day per year may be used for deaths that do not fall under the immediate family definition. This day will be deducted from the employee sick leave accrual time.
Personal Business Leave

Personal Business Leave is defined as days of absence because of reasons deemed of personal importance to the employee. No deduction from the employee's regular income will be deducted for pre-approved personal business leave days. To request a personal day, the employee needs to request approval for the day first from their principal and/or supervisor then complete the online Personal Business Leave Request Form.

Once a year, an employee may request to have two sick days converted into one additional personal day due to personal unforeseen circumstances. The employee needs to complete the Personal Business Leave Request Form which includes checking the 'requesting a conversion' box.
Vacation

12-month employees accrue 10 days of vacation during their first year of employment. After five years of employment, employees may accrue additional vacations days. Vacation may be used in increments not to exceed 10 vacation days consecutively. For more information regarding the accrual and use of vacation days, refer to Board of Education Policy Vacation.
