Healthcare Science Program Overview

    The Healthcare Science program prepares students who desire to enter the healthcare field as a career. The Healthcare Science courses offered provide students with foundational knowledge, information about healthcare careers, and an opportunity to practice skills through coursework and/or student organizations.  

    Certifications to be earned:

    • Basic Life Support
    • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10
    • Certified Nurse Aide
    • Nutrition Assistant
    • Optional:
      • Pharmacy Technician (optional)
      • Phlebotomy Technician (must be 18 years old by fall) 

    College credit to be earned:

    • Medical Terminology at Johnson County Community College, three hours
    • Certified Nurse Assistant at Johnson County Community College, five hours
    • Health Information Technology at Johnson County Community College, two hours
    • OSHA 10 at Flint Hills, one hour

    Students must be in good standing, demonstrate professionalism, and have good attendance. They must have a 3.0 GPA in English and have a 2.5 cumulative unweighted GPA.

    Career and Technical Student Organizations

    Each student is encouraged to become a chapter member, participate in competitions, attend conferences, become officers and work towards scholarships offered by these organizations.

    SkillsUSA — This student-led organization is a partnership between education and industry. It provides an opportunity for students to build a foundation for career and life success, allowing students to explore, develop and build on their education and chosen path or industry.
