Driver's Education Program Update

  • Driver’s education for the 2020-21 school year is currently partaking in small online classes with students from individual high schools. This allows us to do our part in keeping with the Johnson County Health Department guidelines.

This online plan will also include the steps we need to take to meet safety guidelines during COVID-19.

Students must be at 14.5 years old by the first class. It is highly recommended that students have their “Instructional permit” (IP) from the state of Kansas before enrolling in the class. Driving experience with a parent is recommended prior to the start of class.

Please continue to visit this webpage for updated information concerning participating schools and dates.

Summer 2021 Driver Education

  • Updated Information

Thanks for taking an interest in the summer 2021 driver's education program. It received an amazing response and number of registrations. Coordinators take the oldest students first. If your student has not been notified via email about summer registration, they will be put on a waiting list which will be used in case of cancellations.

Information about the 2021-22 after-school programs will be available in July.

The Olathe School District will offer driver’s education this summer in a virtual classroom format. Classes will meet daily from 11:00 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday.

Two sessions will be offered. The June session will run June 1-24. The July session will run June 28-July 22. Students will pick a morning or afternoon driving session. Morning drives will take place between 7-11 a.m., in one-hour increments. Afternoon drives will take place between noon-4 p.m. in one-hour increments.

Students will drive with their assigned instructor two or three days a week and it will not interfere with class time. Students will be dropped off and picked up at Olathe East High School, headquarters for the driver’s education program.

Students may register online beginning April 12 and ending April 30. Students will choose the June or July session and morning or afternoon drive session. We will take the oldest students for each session.

A learner’s permit is not required to take drivers education. Students must be 14.5 years old by the first class. Priority for enrollment will be given to older students. Driving experience with a parent is recommended prior to the start of class.

The cost is $300 payable by credit card, cash or check and due at registration prior to the first day of class. Successful completion of the course plus additional driving experience will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver’s license or restricted license (depending on their age and length of time they have held a permit).

Parents will be notified by email if their student has been selected for the program from information provided on our online registration process. Selection is based upon the student’s birth date, with oldest students first.
