Using The Polar Monitor

  • First, be aware that PE is not simply doing workouts. There are written assignments that also must be completed, found in Moodle. That is where the PE gradebook is located and where workout grades will also be posted.

Here's the process for getting the Polar monitor ready for use:

    1. The student must configure their Polar watch and begin doing workouts. A "test", or sample, workout must be completed before the course start day. Students can immediately begin accumulating workouts, one per day. Each workout shows the date and time it was completed, as well as required elements such as time in the fit zone. Workouts stay in the Polar watch unless they are manually deleted one by one. A print copy of the setup instructions comes with the Polar monitor. The Setup section below contains the same information.
    2. The student must access the Company Portal on the start menu of their computer and install the Polar software. This installs drivers that allow the Polar watch to "talk" to the student computer to upload their workouts using a browser, preferably Chrome. If the student does not have Chrome installed, this software is also available in the Company Portal.
      • Students may also install the Polar app on a smartphone and use bluetooth to sync workouts to their Polar account.
      • Students may also download and install the Polar software from the Polar website on a personal computer to sync workouts to their Polar account.
    3. The student must create their Polar account online using their school email address. Chrome is the preferred browser. The student can then log into their Polar account and sync their Polar monitor, using their sync cord, so that all the workouts accumulated in their watch go into their Polar account. Again, all details of the workout are visible.
      • Students may also sync using the app on their smart phone.
      • Students may also sync using a personal computer.
    4. The PE teacher will send the student an invite to join the teacher's coaching group. This shows up in the student's Polar account online and they also receive an email to their student email account. Once the student accepts the invitation, the teacher will immediately be able to see the student's Polar account and all of the student's workouts for grading. Workouts in the Polar monitor alone cannot be seen for grading. Workouts must be uploaded into the student's Polar account to be graded.

Saving Workouts and Syncing

  • Each workout must be saved on the Polar monitor, and workouts can accumulate. Students can scroll through workouts on their Polar monitor and see each one. If there is a workout that the student doesn't want to save, it can be manually deleted. This has to be accomplished one by one; there is no feature that will delete all workouts. If there are no workouts on the Polar device, then the student either has not completed them or has not saved them. Only completed workouts can be graded.

Then, syncing the workouts to the student's Polar account is required so that the teacher can see them for grading. Students are encouraged to sync often, either with their student computer or using the app on their phone, so that their teacher can see and provide feedback on workouts.

Completing and saving workouts, and syncing them for grading, are separate non-related processes which are often confused by students who believe they are having issues. In both cases, failure to follow instructions resulting in user error is often found to be the problem and additional training with the monitor usually solves any issues.

Troubleshooting

  • The most common issue students experience is getting their Polar monitor to sync with their student device.

    • About once a year the district's student safety vendor blocks the Polar site in the web filter because it's a "commerce" site selling things. Once students report this we can get the site unblocked and proceed. We do not know without student reports and we need screenshots of the block message, so if that happens we appreciate your help.
    • Some devices just don't want to "play" with anything external. Here are some options:
      • Check the USB port for lint, etc.
      • Be sure you have the red arrows on the Polar and charger aligned.
      • Clear your browsing history and close your browser. Reboot your computer with the device plugged in.
      • Install the Polar app on your smartphone and sync with your phone. This works great if you take your Polar on a short trip and don't want to take your computer.
      • Using a personal computer, install the Polar software from the website and sync using that computer.
    • Our PE teachers are the Polar experts (not Mr Warner) and will help troubleshoot.
    • Our district Technology Division can provide support by appointment. Generally eAcademy will refer you to them if we are first unable to help.
