Software On Your Student Device
-
Student devices are locked down to prevent students from installing random software programs. Attempting to install software will result in a dialog asking for an administrator password which students (and even teachers) do not have. Software that students have permission to install is located in the Company Portal. Click the Start menu, scroll to find the Company Portal, and click. When the Portal opens, click any software title to install. It will take a few minutes for the software to download and install, and the installation dialog will indicate when the installation is complete.
On the High School Resources page, students can watch a video on how to use the Company Portal.
Note: If there is a Windows or other update pushed out by district technology that has not been installed, this may block installation of other software. It is recommended that students restart their computer to allow updates to run, before accessing the Company Portal to install software. This will help ensure that the device is ready to load new software titles.
Browsers
-
eAcademy recommends using Mozilla Firefox or Chrome to run our Learning Management Systems and multimedia. Internet Explorer and Edge have complex security features that often block multimedia content and are not recommended for eAcademy course work, so please do not use these browsers.
Student Computers: To get clean (no adware, etc) installs of Chrome or Firefox on your student device, click the Start button and then Company Portal and find the icons for these browsers and install from there.
Personal Computers: On your personal device, use these links to get a clean install. Note that the district does not provide technical support in any manner for personal computers.
Microsoft Office 365
-
Student Computers: While it's possible to use the online version of Office through a browser, this is not ideal for working in Moodle. When you are ready to attach and submit an assignment, that document must be on your device, not in the cloud. We recommend having Office 365 installed on your computer.
Student devices may not come preloaded with Office 365 software. Instead the icons may link to the online, cloud-based version of Office. To install office directly on the device, click your Start button and find the Company Portal. The portal contains installation icons for all student software. Find Microsoft Office and install. Even if you think it's already installed, you can reinstall to have the latest software version. Installation may take five minutes or more. Watch a video demonstrating the Company Portal.
Office 365 can also be installed from the Microsoft App Store. Watch a video showing how to use the App Store.
Personal Computers: Olathe students may also download Office 365 on up to five personal devices for FREE including Windows tablets, iPads, iPhones, and Android phones. There are no monthly or annual fees, the license does not expire after a fixed period of time, and the software is a full local install (not cloud-based), so you can use the software when your computer is offline away from Internet access. See the school district instructions for downloading Office software on personal devices. Note that the district does not provide technical support in any manner for personal computers.
Adobe Reader for PDFs
-
Student Computers: Most browsers will read a PDF document. However, eAcademy students using district-issued computers will need the Adobe Reader software which will open all PDF files. You can check the PDF icons on your computer to know if you have Adobe Reader. Open your File Explorer and find a PDF. On the PDF file you should see the Adobe icon shown on this page to the right. If you do not see this exact icon with the Adobe triangle on it, then you do not have Adobe Reader and you must install it. Directions: Click the Start menu and click on Company Portal. Adobe Reader can be found there in the portal. Click to install. Upon running the software, Adobe should ask to be the default application for PDFs. Say yes. You always want to open PDFs with the Acrobat Reader.
Personal Computers: Do not use this link for student computers. On personal computers, download and install Adobe Reader from the Adobe website. Note that the district does not provide any manner of technical support for personal computers.
PolarFlow for Physical Education
-
Physical education students will need to install the PolarFlow software on their student computer so that the Polar heart monitor can connect to sync workouts to the PolarFlow website. PolarFlow software can be found in the Company Portal with other software available to students.
PolarFlow is also available as a cell phone app so that students can connect their Polar monitor to their phone via Bluetooth to upload workouts.
Personal Devices
-
The Olathe Technology Department cannot provide support for troubleshooting, installation of software, or any other support, for student personal devices. Students are expected to use their district-issued student devices for all school work.
