Explore music this summer with these fun activities as you level up your learning!
Steady Beat!
Play your favorite song and show the steady beat of the music. Pat your shoulders, clap your hands, stomp, walk, or choose your own way to keep that beat! Play it again and add a stuffed animal friend. Can you tap your stuffed animal on your head? Can you tap your stuffed animal on the floor? Tap them anywhere as long as it goes with the steady beat!Apple Tree
Sing or say these rhyming words: “Apple tree, apple tree, will your apple fall on me? I won’t cry and I won’t shout, if your apples knock me out!” Find six objects (our video example uses apples and cups) and tap the top of the object on the beat as you sing. The object you tap on the word, “out!” is OUT! Keep going until there is one object left. Who was the winner? Or, try playing with your family, “Duck Duck Goose” style! Watch this YouTube video to see this fun activity in action!Listening Walk
There is music all around us, we just have to find it! Go on a walk with a trusted adult. Explore the different sounds you hear. Do your shoes make the same sound as your grown-up’s shoes? Is the wind blowing? Do you hear a car horn, or a neighbor’s pets? If you see a person on your walk, say hello! See if their voice is high or low. What other sounds do you hear?Down By the Bay
Click here to listen to this silly song on YouTube! Did you notice that at the end of each verse, the singer makes a rhyme? Talk with a grown up or sibling about what rhyming words you heard. Then, work together to create your own silly rhymes! “Did you ever see a ____, ______ a ________? Down by the bay!” See how many fun new verses you can create for this song.Opposites: High and Low
Opposites are things that are different, like high and low. A composer named Mr. Elgar wrote a song that uses high and low sounds to tell us a story about two characters: the fairies and the giants. Fairies are small, so they make a high sound. Giants are big and heavy, so they have a low sound. Move around your space like a tiny fairy, or a big giant. Click here to play the song “Fairies and Giants,” and act out each character as you hear them. Make up a story for our characters. Why are they in the forest? What is happening when we hear each character in the song?Opposites: Fast and Slow
Fast and slow are another pair of musical opposites! Make a list of things that are fast and things that are slow. A turtle is slow. A cheetah is fast! What else can you think of? Then, go pretend that you are ice skating in an open space. Instead of ice skates, use two paper plates, flattened cardboard boxes, or something else you can use to make your feet move smoothly across the floor. Have your grown up play different songs that are fast, like Flight of the Bumblebee, or songs that are slow, like Moonlight Sonata, while you ice skate!Opposites: High and Low
Another pair of opposites are high and low sounds. Things that are bigger make lower sounds, like grown up voices or a big drum! Things that are smaller make higher sounds, like a bird or a baby. Make a list of things that make high sounds or low sounds.Song Maker
Every day we have lots of big feelings that we feel, like happy, sad, excited, or mad. What are some other big feelings you have? Click here to go to Song Maker on Chrome Music Lab. Use the colors to make a song that sounds sad. Do you like the sad song? Did you make it fast or slow? See if you can make a happy song next. What did you change to make it sound happy?
