Expectations for Teaching Staff

  • Staff

Our online teachers generally teach full time in the regular classroom and are busy all day on school days. They accept an eAcademy instructional position as an after-contract assignment, much like a coaching position. This means they work a limited number of hours each day and students should not expect immediate responses.

    Communication

Teachers will post announcements in their course weekly, send emails weekly, and send direct email to students if there are things to be addressed. Parents may be CC in messages. It is the student's responsibility to check their school email account daily and to respond to emails sent by the teaching staff and eAcademy. Teachers will communicate directly with students and often CC parents. eAcademy supports student growth in self-advocacy skills, meaning that students should take responsibility for their education and not rely on parents to ask questions. We recommend that students CC parents on emails to staff and staff will Reply To All so that parents see the responses.

Teachers conduct a required Zoom startup meeting on the first day of each course term, and will provide makeup options for students unable to attend. Students will receive critical information regarding course expectations procedures such as the use of supplemental course management systems during this meeting. Teachers also offer weekly or bi-weekly optional Zoom meetings throughout the course term for review, question-answer, and other content support. Parents may sit with their students and listen during the Zooms but should not log in as participants.

    Response Times

Teaching staff are expected to respond to email within 24 hours, and provide some sort of grading response (not necessarily grades) to student assignments within 48 hours of due dates. Staff are expected to maintain limited work hours five days per week, and are not expected to provide around-the-clock availability. Teachers will post information about their availability in their course. Students should be aware of their teacher's schedule and not expect immediate responses to email, especially late at night.

    Grading

Teachers will grade assignments in a timely manner and post feedback as needed in the online gradebook built into the course management system. Students will receive corrective feedback as needed, but may not receive feedback on every assignment, especially those where they have done well.
