Mathematical March (Madness)
Hello Parents!
Mathematical March (Madness) is happening at Rolling Ridge! On Friday March 1st your student will come home with a math log and flash cards. Each time they practice their math facts/ flashcards at home for five minutes, help them color in one of the "5s". They can turn their log in at the end of the month (on Friday, March 29th. Please help your student practice their math facts if you are able or encourage them to practice on their own! Even 5 minutes is powerful!
Please feel free to reach out to your Title Math Team (Arielle Zarr and Robin Breedlove) with any questions!
Marzo Matemático
¡Hola Padres!

Lil' Owls in the Kitchen
My name is Naomi Pickens and I teach Family and Consumer Science at Olathe West. I wanted to reach out and share some information about an upcoming cooking camp we’re offering at Olathe West this summer. We’d love for students from your school to join us!
The camp is called Lil Owls in the Kitchen, and it’s open to any elementary/middle school-aged-children that are going into grades 4-8 in the 2024-2025 school year. We are offering a morning and afternoon session and the camp runs the week of June 10-13, 2024 at Olathe West, in our Culinary labs. The cost of the camp is $135 and includes all materials, supplies and an apron!

24-25 School Year Changes
Olathe Families -
As a reminder, we will see a few changes in the new year and next school year.
Open Enrollment Beginning in 2024 for 24-25 School Year
Kansas House Bill 2567 states all public-school districts must allow non-resident students who reside in Kansas to enroll in and attend any school if the district has the capacity and this takes effect in the 2024-25 school year. Our policy includes an in-district transfer period starting Jan. 4, followed by a district employee transfer period starting March 1. District enrollment capacity must be determined by May 1 and posted on the district website by June 1. Non-resident applications would be accepted June 1-30, followed by a non-resident lottery selection process July 1-15. For more information, click here.
Start and End Times Beginning in 2024-25 School Year
The following start and end time schedule will begin in August 2024.
- High schools and Prairie Learning Center, 7:40 a.m.-2:40 p.m.
- Middle schools and Heartland Early Childhood Center, 8:20 a.m.-3:20 p.m.
- Elementary schools and Harmony Early Childhood Center, 8:55 a.m.-3:55 p.m.
The district understands this change will impact every family differently. Please be on the lookout for more information on solutions impacting each level and the transportation restrictions in place for this year that will be removed. The Board of Education approval of this new schedule during their December meeting gave the district, families and staff a full semester and summer to make necessary plans and adjustments before school starts in August 2024. For more information, click here.
Updates to Elementary Computer Program
As you know, the district will be implementing updated start/end times in the 2024-25 school year. With the updates to start/end times for the 2024-25 school year comes a change in student instructional time as we align instructional minutes across all levels. As we prepare for this transition in the instructional day at the elementary level, we are taking this opportunity to evaluate student needs and ensure we are maximizing instructional time, and want to make you aware of an important change in programming at the elementary level.
Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, the district will no longer offer the elementary computer program as it currently exists, but will be reimagining how we incorporate technology education into daily instruction. We are living in an increasingly digital world and our students are coming to us with greater access, experience and skills with computers and technology than ever before. Additionally, since the development of the elementary computer program approximately 18 years ago, our district has been able to implement 1:1 devices at all levels, providing greater access and seamless integration of technology into the learning day.
As we look at how we can maximize instructional time moving forward, we will be evaluating how we can integrate the lessons and skills historically taught in the elementary computer program into our regular daily instruction in both core content and specials content areas with certified/licensed staff. The district is currently in the process of developing a study group comprised of elementary specials teachers, general education teachers, and administrators to work collaboratively to determine how we can best utilize the instructional time gained through the incorporation of this content into other areas of instruction throughout the day.
Please know, the district is committed to finding placement and has guaranteed employment in comparable roles for our Computer Learning Assistants who have helped champion this program and have played a critical role in providing technology education to our elementary students. We want to take this opportunity to thank our CLAs for their tremendous work in helping spearhead technology education at the elementary level and we look forward to continuing this important work as we evolve how we incorporate technology in our instruction moving forward.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Reporting an Absence at Rolling Ridge
As we settle into the school year, we would like to remind our families of the best ways to report your child absent from school at Rolling Ridge.
- Call our attendance line at (913) 780-7650
- Email our attendance desk at RRattendance@olatheschools.org
- Click the Report an Absence link on our school homepage, just below the rotating images
Each of these ways will put you in touch with the appropriate person(s) rather than clicking the generic Email Us link found on our school website homepage. If you have any questions, please review Olathe School's Attendance Policy Here.
Thanks for keeping us informed of your child’s absence!
