Safe and Drug-Free Schools

We have initiated a number of programs to promote safe and drug-free schools for children of all ages. The programs include school-focused policies and curriculum, student and parent-focused initiatives, and participation in community programs.

We prioritize a well-rounded, proactive approach to student health, safety and well-being. Sixth-graders take Project Alert, with follow-up lessons in later grades. Middle schoolers also learn from the evidence-based Second Step program focused on bullying and substance abuse prevention, while high school freshmen complete Alcohol.Edu. Schools enforce clear conduct guidelines, partner with School Resource Officers for safety and education, and participate in initiatives like Red Ribbon Week and Project Graduation. Counselors teach anti-bullying strategies, and after-school programs and all-day kindergarten help keep students engaged. Each year, all schools complete the Communities That Care Survey to assess student needs.

Student/Parent Focused Initiatives

  • Students and parents may participate in the Help Clinic for counseling sessions.
  • We are committed to providing alternative education through Hope, SOAR, Choices, and Prairie Learning Center.
  • District policy provides funding for drug evaluation for any student in activities or athletics who has been involved with alcohol or drugs. Many schools and alternative programs have on-site support groups for those dealing with substance abuse or for students whose families are dealing with drugs and alcohol.

Facing Fentanyl

This initiative aimed at empowering our school community through education about the dangers of fentanyl. A powerful and deadly synthetic opioid 100 times stronger than morphine, fentanyl has become the leading cause of death in young people ages 15-20. According to recent data, Kansas leads the nation in overdose deaths per capita as of October 2023, making it more important than ever to raise awareness and provide education about its devastating effects. Thanks to a grant awarded to our school district from the 2024 Continuum of Care Fund, Olathe Public Schools is leading the way in fentanyl education. Through our Facing Fentanyl OPS 233 campaign, we strive to provide resources, information, and support to help combat the fentanyl crisis and keep our school community safe. Join us in facing fentanyl head-on and together, we will make a difference. For more information about Facing Fentanyl, please email Matt Johnson.
