Solutions to Common Enrollment Concerns
I may have conflicts with sports and activities.
Olathe West Band members are involved in every sport and activity offered at Olathe West High School! When an overlap does occur between activities, the OW staff is very accommodating of students' involvement. Students are taught to plan ahead, provide advanced communication, and be proactive. There is a middle-ground where students can participate in BOTH (or multiple!) activities. We want you to do Band AND...!!!
I may have limited room in my class schedule.
There are SO many great course choices in high school — this is both a blessing and a curse! Having a well-rounded class schedule is important and with a little planning, we are confident you can fit Band into your schedule each year. The OW Band has many students enrolled in our 21st Century Programs, AP Classes, as well as other electives, such as Strength and Conditioning. Remember that you have FOUR years to complete your academic plan, so make some time to have FUN, play music, and be a part of a great organization!
I'm unsure whether I'll enjoy high school band.
We are confident that you are going to LOVE high school band! It builds upon your experience from middle school, while providing additional opportunities for students to rehearse and perform. Whether you enroll in Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, or participate in groups like Pep Band, you will find many other band students who are passionate about music, are motivated, and like to have fun. Consider this too — all high school students need a fine arts credit. Give Band a shot as a freshman, and then reevaluate at the end of the year. We know you'll LOVE high school band and come back for more.
I'm unsure if I'll like Marching Band.
Marching Band is an AWESOME experience, and often times is a highlight for OW Band students. From the outside looking in, Marching Band may seem a little overwhelming. But remember, students do not need to know ANYTHING about Marching Band prior to joining. Band director Carol Lowman, assistant band director John Wickersham, and our awesome student leaders will teach you everything you need to know! Before you know it, you'll make new friends, learn cool music, have amazing performance experiences, and have a ton of FUN! If Marching Band still doesn't seem like a good fit, enroll in Concert Band, which will be similar to your school-day band experience so far!
