9-27-23 — School Start/End Time Committee Hosts Second Meeting

Sept. 27, 2023 ~ On Tuesday, Sept. 26, Olathe Public Schools hosted more than 125 parents, teachers, administrators, certified and classified staff members at its second of three committee meetings this fall as we continue our work to identify modified start/end times for the 2024-25 school year. (see a recap of the previous meeting)

These committees are representative of the district’s three grade levels (early childhood/elementary, middle and high school) and have been tasked with reviewing new start/end time schedule options, assessing survey feedback and diving into the challenges and opportunities each schedule presents to help identify a schedule recommendation and implementation plan to present to the Board of Education for consideration this semester.

This meeting provided a deep dive into the challenges facing the district currently with the 2023-2024 school year interventions in place, a comprehensive look at why high school is placed at the first tier in both options on the survey, and a review of student, staff and parent feedback. (view the meeting presentation in PDF format) The committee members then divided up into breakout sessions led by the school level assistant superintendents. Committee members gathered with the school level they represent to discuss both survey options’ pros, cons, questions and possible solutions from their collective perspective. At the next meeting, committee members will review the feedback collected by the school level committees and work together toward a recommendation for the Board of Education.
