9-10-21 — Canyon Creek Participates in Freedom Walk

Sept. 10, 2021 ~ On Friday, Sept. 10, Canyon Creek Elementary honored victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, as well as all first responders, at a special assembly and Freedom Walk at the school. The students and staff took 2,071 steps in memory of those who lost their lives and in honor of all first responders who protect and serve. The number of steps, 2,071, represents the number of steps in the World Trade Center towers. In addition to the Freedom Walk, students collected snacks and drinks to donate care packages to the following groups as a way of saying thank you: the Lenexa Police Department, the Lenexa Fire Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, National Guard, Advent Hospital staff, Med-Act and Red Cross.

“Community service is important to our Canyon Creek families,” Principal Christy James said. “We chose to honor our first responders while educating our students about an important event in history. Our goal is for students to understand what happened on 9/11, why we need to remember, how our first responders and military help during a time of crisis and how we can come together as a community to support one another."

This is the first Freedom Walk at Canyon Creek and the school staff plan to make it an annual event.
