Olathe Student Athletes Earn State Titles
Recently the 6A Kansas State Track and Field Championships took place in Wichita, Kansas. Many teams and student athletes from Olathe high schools participated and a few earned state championships.
Dana Baker, Olathe North High School senior, earned the javelin and discus state championship. This is Baker’s third straight javelin championship.
The Olathe North girls 4 x 800M relay team of Hannah Rodina, Claire Fuhlhage, Sarah Whitaker and Zoey Schillinger won the state championship.
Bailey Turner, Olathe East High School senior, earned the girls long jump state championship.
Olathe Northwest High School senior Julian Lacey won the boys 800M run.
The 6A Kansas State Swimming and Diving Championships took place in Topeka, Kansas. Many teams and student athletes from Olathe high schools participated and one athlete earned an individual state championship.
Olathe North sophomore Anika Lam earned the state championship for the girls 200M individual medley. Lam also received second place in the 100-yard freestyle.
Olathe Staff Members Named to State Standards Review Committee
Three Olathe Public Schools staff members were selected to the Kansas State History, Government and Social Studies (HGSS) Standards Review Committee. Teachers Courtney Wheeler, Olathe Northwest High School; Ashley Umphrey, Chisholm Trail Middle School; and Marcy Good, Meadow Lane Elementary, will serve as part of a 25-member committee.
“The HGSS Standards Revision Committee considers itself incredibly lucky to have such an esteemed group of experienced educators from across the state who are passionate about informing the state’s mission and vision for history, government and social studies education in the near future,” Olathe Public Schools K-12 Social Studies Coordinator Tina Ellsworth said. “Olathe is very well represented by Courtney, Ashley, and Marcy who are all incredibly dedicated educators who will be tremendous assets to this process. We are proud of their commitment to not only the larger profession of social studies education, but ultimately to the learning of Kansas students.”
Students and Staff Take Part in All-State Musical
In early August, 48 students from 22 Kansas high schools will take part in the Kansas Thespian All-State Musical including 16 students from four Olathe high schools. Kansas Thespians has produced several all-state shows, however, this is only the second show in the last two decades.
“Bring It On” will be performed at Olathe South High School Aug. 9-11 at 7 p.m. each night with a 2 p.m. matinee on the final day. Tickets will be available on the Kansas Thespian website in early June.
In total 10 theater teachers from around Kansas fill out the staff including Olathe South High School’s David Hastings as the show’s producer and Olathe East High School’s Edward Shafer as director.
Students representing Olathe East High School are Maddie Bragg, Jessica Chitwood, Olivia Hollan, Melinda Johns, Zoey Johnson and Willa Walberg. Students representing Olathe North High School are Katie Cronin, Hannah Guzman, Sophia Hillman and Emily Martin. Olathe South High School students are Elise Bowles, Anna Hastings, Evan Nugent and Antoine Sanders. Olathe West High School students are Lauren Karlin and Kayli Kimerer.
“This show is all about bringing people together,” said David Hastings, producer. “We are trying to support the core values of the Educational Theatre Association: people matter, strive for excellence, work together, and be the person with whom you want to work.”
