1-6-16 — Public Invited to Annual King Celebration
Jan. 6, 2016 ~ The public is invited to join Olathe Public Schools and Olathe Human Relations Commission for the city's 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17. "Love Illuminates Life" is the theme of this year's celebration at the Embassy Suites and Conference Center, 10401 Ridgeview Road (at K-10 Highway), Olathe.
The afternoon will feature keynote speaker Ryan M. Jones of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn., and a pre-recorded message by Dr. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King Jr. The celebration is an opportunity for Olathe youth to promote a society free of bullying, discrimination and mistreatment of others based on race, gender or religion by sharing their views in essays, visual art, or mixed media presentations. Contest winners will receive cash prizes and the top three high school winners will receive a trip to the National Civil Rights Museum.
A number of students will read their essays, and many entries will be displayed at the event and later in the downtown Olathe Public Library. The MLK Celebration Choir will make its first public appearance.
The Martin Luther King Celebration is sponsored by Bott Radio Networks, Robert Brogden Buick GMC, Olathe Ford Lincoln, Enterprise Bank, and Harlan C. Parker and Jason S. Parker – State Farm, in partnership with the City of Olathe, Olathe Public Library, and Olathe Public Schools.
