7-18-16 — Schier to Lead Olathe Board of Education for Second Year
July 18, 2016 ~ Rick Schier was re-elected president of the Olathe Board of Education during the group's regular meeting on July 14. This is his second year as president. Brent McCune was re-elected vice president for the 2016-17 year, which is also his second year in the position.
The board also appointed a clerk (Joy Bondurant), deputy clerk (Gail McKay), treasurer (Merle Hastert) and school attorney (Michael G. Norris of Norris & Keplinger, L.L.C.) for the new fiscal year.
In other business, the board:
- Approved a consent agenda including meeting minutes, various reports, textbooks, instructional resources, Head Start transportation plan, student trips, resolution for petty cash funds, resolution for use of district activity funds, authorization of advance payments of claims, 1,116-hour policy for the 2016-17 school year, designating May 26 as an inclement weather day, designating "The Olathe News" as the official newspaper for publication of school notices, various appointments and designations, resolution for document destruction, qualified financial depositories for idle district funds, and resolution for disposal of surplus property.
- Approved an inter-local agreement with the Olathe Police Department to provide school resource officers for the 2016-17 school year, and an automatic renewal for the 2017-18 year, with an SRO for Olathe West High School.
- Approved a bid for a 3D printer to replace one used in the Aerospace and Engineering program at Olathe Northwest High School since summer 2007.
- Appointed board members to serve with various organizations: Shannon Wickliffe with the Head Start Policy Council, LeEtta Felter with the Olathe Public Schools Foundation board, and Amy Martin with the Kansas Association of School Boards Governmental Relations Network.
- Set a regular meeting schedule of 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month in the Education Center. Meeting dates will be Aug. 4, Sept. 1, Oct. 6, Nov. 3, Dec. 1, Jan. 5, 2017, Feb. 2, March 2, April 6, May 4, and June 1. The 2017-18 organizational meeting will be July 13, 2017. The third Thursday of each month will be reserved for special meetings if necessary.
- Scheduled special board meetings at 6 p.m. July 26 for preliminary budget presentation and for community budget workshop and Aug. 18 for a public hearing on budgets and adopt the 2016-17 budget.
- Received information on future action items including physics textbooks; furniture, fixtures and equipment for Olathe West; trade bids for Middle School 10; water utility easement across district property near Canyon Creek Highlands subdivision; curriculum; instructional materials; and a land lease with Palmetto Tower Company.
- Received the Boardsmanship Guide as a resource for conducting their duties in 2016-17.
- Held an executive session to discuss personnel matters. They returned from executive session and voted to engage a contractor to assist with finding a search firm for the process of hiring a superintendent.
