8-18-16 — Changes Coming to Federal Student Aid
Sept. 1, 2016 Update ~The district's local scholarship night will be held in conjunction with the financial aid event. Local scholarship providers will be on hand from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Olathe Community Center on Sept. 14.
Aug. 18, 2016 ~ Approximately 2,000 Olathe high school students have begun their senior year and are looking ahead to graduation and their academic futures. A common question for these seniors and their parents is how to pay for their post-secondary education.
The district’s Financial Aid Night will provide important information about work-study options, grants, scholarships, and changes in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process.
The event is planned for 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14 in the Olathe Community Center, 1205 E. Kansas City Road. It replaces the individual financial aid nights formerly held in each high school.
“This financial aid night particularly targets high school seniors and their parents, although it’s never too early to learn about the financial aid process,” College and Career Readiness Coordinator Angie Salava said.
Nationally recognized financial aid expert Larry Moeder from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Kansas State University will be the guest presenter. Each high school will also have at least one counselor present to help answer questions from parents and students.
A key part of the discussion will be changes to the FAFSA process starting this fall.
“The biggest change to the FAFSA is the timing of it and the information that can be used,” Salava said. “The date to begin filing the FAFSA has moved to Oct. 1 of a student’s senior year instead of Jan. 1. Students can now use 2015 tax returns to file their FAFSA whereas in previous years, students had to estimate their tax numbers or wait until their taxes were completed in order to file.”
The free event is open to any student or parent who wants to know more about the college financial aid process. Questions may be directed to Salava at (913) 780-7006 or anssalava@olatheschools.org.
