11-8-16 — Students, Staff Recognize Importance of Veterans Day
Nov. 8, 2016 ~ Thousands of students and staff across the Olathe School District have plans to honor area veterans during this week leading up to Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11. Here is a list of activities.
Arbor Creek Elementary School will hold a special assembly on Veterans Day.
Bentwood Elementary School will host its eighth annual Veterans Day Celebration on Friday. Second-graders learned songs and memorized scripted commentary about the branches of service. The Blue Jay Singers (special chorus) will also sing and the Junior ROTC from Shawnee Mission West High School will post the colors. All veterans in the audience will be invited to tell their name and dates/places of service.
Black Bob Elementary School Student Council members will serve a breakfast for veterans. The second-grade class and Special Chorus will sing patriotic songs.
Briarwood Elementary School fifth-graders will help serve breakfast to veterans at the local HyVee store. Veterans' names will be listed on the kiosk in the school entry.
Brougham Elementary School will recognize veterans during morning announcements.
California Trail Middle School has been writing letters to veterans at the Olathe American Legion and are holding an assembly and a reception for veterans.
Cedar Creek Elementary School students invited one guest or relative who is a veteran to participate in activities on Veterans Day. Army vehicles will be parked outside the school for students to view that morning, and an all-school assembly is planned for the afternoon. The second-grade Boy Scout troop will post the colors before fourth-graders lead the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the national anthem. An Army soldier will present "What Veterans Day Is and What Being a Veteran Entails." A student will play Taps to end the program.
Central Elementary School students are placing stars with a veteran's name on the Veterans' Wall of Honor throughout the week. An assembly Friday morning will include recognition of veterans in attendance, songs by the Special Chorus, and a parade outside led by some Olathe North High School band members.
Chisholm Trail Middle School students created a "Thank You Veterans" video which will be shown in classes and sent to various military groups to share with service men and women. Social studies classes organized interviews of staff and students who have family members currently serving in the military and the impact it has made on their lives. Student art relating to Veterans Day is on display in the hallway, and a Wall of Honor recognized Chisholm Trail family members who have or are currently serving. A Veterans Day assembly will showcase student music and poetry. Invited veterans will have a special luncheon.
Countryside Elementary School's Special Chorus will perform during an assembly and area veterans will be introduced. Members of the Post 156 Legion Riders will ride motorcycles onto the playground and present the American flag.
Fairview Elementary School plans a special assembly recognizing Veterans Day.
Forest View Elementary School staff and students will say the Pledge of Allegiance at the flag pole while wearing red, white and blue clothing. Small American flags will be placed around the front of the school and three veterans will talk to students during their lunch periods.
Frontier Trail Middle School has invited veterans to come to the school to have lunch the week of Nov. 7-11.
Green Springs Elementary School custodian and Vietnam veteran Bob Ritz will raise the flag after morning announcements and the Glee Club will sing the national anthem. Students will say the Pledge of Allegiance before going back to their classrooms to watch a video prepared by the school's Kindness Club and discuss Veterans Day. Teachers will also provide a letter-writing activity for soldiers.
Havencroft Elementary School is planning an all-school assembly for Veterans Day.
Heatherstone Elementary School provides a luncheon in the school library for invited veterans. The library is decorated for Veterans Day and staff members provide the lunch. Students and families provide photos of veterans for a special display, and the school takes a picture of each veteran with the child who invited him/her to lunch.
Heritage Elementary School's second-graders do a performance recognizing each branch of the military. All veterans in the community are invited to attend.
Indian Creek Elementary School's Special Chorus will perform during the day and in the evening. A video of Indian Creek friends and family who have been or are in the military will play while the students sing.
Indian Trail Middle School will hosts its Veteran's Day assembly and concert, including a veteran guest speaker and recognition of IT staff who have served.
Madison Place Elementary School plans a reception for community veterans and guests followed by a school-wide assembly celebrating veterans.
Mahaffie Elementary School students and staff invited their family members and friends who are veterans to take part in an assembly on Veterans Day. Photos of those veterans will be displayed during the assembly and each grade level will do something special for veterans (sing a song, recite original poems, write thank-you notes, perform a cheer, make flags, or present recognition certificates).
Manchester Park Elementary School will celebrate Veterans Day during morning announcements.
Millbrooke Elementary School plans an all-school assembly featuring veterans, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Mission Trail Middle School students brought in photos of veterans to be placed in a wall of fame in the commons.
Meadow Lane Elementary School hosts a breakfast for invited veterans, and asked parents to send in photos of veterans for a special bulletin board.
Northview Elementary School will recognize the day during morning announcements.
Olathe East High School will host a series of guest speakers from the VFW to discuss Veterans Day and pick up thank-you notes and colored pictures made by Olathe elementary students.
Olathe Northwest High School will celebrate the day with everyone wearing red, white and blue on Friday. Earlier in the week, the Junior ROTC held a presentation.
Olathe South High School's Falcon Service Club painted a flag to be displayed in the commons area. The Southside Singers will participate in the Johnson County Veterans Day observance on Friday in Olathe's Veterans Memorial Park.
Oregon Trail Middle School set a theme of "giving thanks and showing appreciation" for Tiger Time all month, and several classes will hold Veterans Day activities to thank those who have served.
Pleasant Ridge Elementary School will host a breakfast for invited veterans and hold a special all-school assembly.
Pioneer Trail Middle School will have a flag raising ceremony before school and an all school assembly with veteran speakers and an opportunity for students to thank veterans as they leave the assembly.
Prairie Center Elementary School hosts a Veterans Day assembly including songs by the Special Chorus. A business partner will provide breakfast for their invited veterans.
Prairie Trail Middle School taught students the proper etiquette when the national anthem is played, and shared a brief history of Veterans Day during announcements. Taps will be played by a band member at the end of the day, and students will be wearing red, white and blue on Veterans Day.
Ravenwood Elementary School will celebrate Veterans Day with a mention during morning announcements.
Regency Place Elementary School created a bulletin board for families to post photos of their members in the service. A fifth-grader will give an overview of Veterans Day during morning announcements.
Ridgeview Elementary School has planned a Veterans Day assembly for invited veterans. Part of the assembly will be announcing the top three Veterans Day essays written by students. A reception for veterans wraps up the morning.
Rolling Ridge Elementary School will hold a Veterans Day music program during the afternoon and again in the evening.
Santa Fe Trail Middle School will have a breakfast and ceremony on Veterans Day.
Scarborough Elementary School will decorate outside with flags to honor veterans.
Sunnyside Elementary School will recognize Veterans Day during morning announcements.
Tomahawk Elementary School teachers are planning to invite some visitors to their classrooms for special activities.
Walnut Grove Elementary School is focusing on patriotic songs during music class this week.
Washington Elementary School is hosting an assembly for its students and has invited veterans to attend, including a World War II veteran. The Special Chorus will sing and there will be remarks made by some of the veterans in attendance. The event will also include the entire student body singing patriotic songs.
Westview and Woodland elementary schools will recognize Veterans Day during morning announcements.
