2-16-17 — Time to Enroll for Citizens Education Academy
Feb. 16, 2017 ~ Olathe Public Schools is offering Citizens Education Academy this spring for individuals wanting to take a closer, more informed look at the workings of the district. The two-hour evening sessions begin in mid-March, providing an in-depth overview of the district before wrapping up with a recognition of the participants at the May 4 Board of Education meeting.

- Would you like a more comprehensive understanding of how the Board of Education functions, or the impact of state legislature upon local districts?
- Do you understand options for our special education students and alternative education programs?
- Have you heard about the Olathe Public Schools Foundation and wanted to know more?
- Are you affiliated with a local business that wants to partner with the district?
- Are you looking for a way to get involved and be an advocate for public education?
Academy participants will learn about demographics, statistics and data that are foundational to the district. A look at recent initiatives and innovations include Olathe West High School, 21st Century Academies, mental health support for students, Millcreek Center's renovation and construction of Middle School #10. A spotlight on teaching and learning will explain efforts that maximize student potential, the role of assessments, and the intricacies and essentials of special education and alternative education. Additional highlights include the Olathe Public Schools Foundation, community partnerships, and a legislative update. District administrators will facilitate the sessions with participation from Board of Education members.
The Citizens Education Academy is open to all interested individuals. Sessions will be held from 6-8 p.m., with a light supper provided, at the Education Center, 14160 Black Bob Rd., Olathe. Meeting dates are March 21, April 4, April 18, and April 25. Academy graduates will be recognized at the May 4 Board of Education meeting.
