9-13-17 — Keep Musical Instruments from Collecting Dust
Sept. 13, 2017 ~ Students as young as fifth grade may enroll in band or orchestra, but sometimes their families can't afford to buy or rent a musical instrument. The district's Musical Instrument Donation Program allows aspiring musicians to pursue their dream of playing in their school orchestra or band.
The district accepts donations of used band and orchestra instruments for students in grades five through 12 who participate in the district's fine arts program.
"We have a growing number of students each year who are not able to purchase or rent an instrument but still want to be a part of one of our band or orchestra programs," Fine Arts Coordinator Martha Gabel said. "Through this donation program, we have been able to assist many students and their families, but the need continues."
Instruments that are especially needed are clarinets, flutes, trombones, trumpets, violas and violins, Gabel said. Donated instruments will be used as needed from year to year.
"A donation of a musical instrument can benefit students for years to come," she said.
For those who would like to help, but don't have a musical instrument to donate, please consider making a donation to the Olathe Public Schools Foundation. Funds donated to the instrument program are used to make necessary repairs or refurbish donated instruments so they can be ready for student use.
For more information on making a tax-deductible instrument donation contact Gabel at (913) 780-8230 or mgabelirc@olatheschools.org. Those who donate a musical instrument will receive a letter they can use as record of a charitable donation.
