10-30-23 — November 2023 Board Meeting Preview

Oct. 30, 2023 ~ Prior to its regular meeting at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, the Olathe Board of Education will hold a public hearing regarding enrollment of non-resident students in response to HB2553 (Kansas open enrollment) starting at 5 p.m.

All meetings will take place in the Education Center, 14160 S. Black Bob Road, Olathe. Anyone wishing to address the board during the regular meeting should contact Clerk of the Board Barb Behm before noon Thursday, Nov. 2. See our Rules for Public Comment webpage for details.

Prairie Trail Middle School students will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by approval of this month’s regular meeting agenda.

One recognition will take place Thursday — 2024 Kansas Teacher of the Year Taylor Bussinger, a teacher at Prairie Trail Middle School.

Four presentations are planned.

  • Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson will discuss some focus areas for the Kansas State Department of Education and the State Board of Education.
  • Forest View Elementary School general music teacher Megan Bricks will showcase American Education Week plans for Nov. 13-17.
  • Deputy Superintendent of Organizational Operations Dr. Jim McMullen will update the board on the process used to inform parents, staff and patrons on the recommended start and end times for next school year.
  • Dr. McMullen will also share the state statute and draft policy about open enrollment within Olathe Public Schools.

The board will act on a consent agenda of routine items as well as bids, contracts and agreements.

Board members will receive information on more than two dozen future action items and two written reports.

An executive session is planned for the board to discuss matters involving a student, and a second session is planned for the board to consult with its attorney.
