2-20-20 - District Offers Information on Dyslexia
Feb. 20, 2020 ~ In an exciting move that is expected to make positive impacts on students in the Olathe Public Schools, the Kansas State Board of Education recently took action on policies related to dyslexia. The state board approved policies aimed at improving instruction for all students, but specifically students who demonstrate characteristics of dyslexia. This will include increasing teacher training around dyslexia.
While the district is still waiting for additional details from the state on what many of these changes will look like, we are excited about the opportunities they will provide around reading and literacy. The district has been working on a strong literacy program for a number of years and has things in place that will complement the requirements set by the state board. These policies will help teachers focus on quality reading instruction through the science of reading and will help support students who have been diagnosed or who have demonstrated characteristics of dyslexia. Additionally, evidence-based training around dyslexia and reading instruction will take place in the coming months to meet these requirements.
Additional information will be shared with schools as the Kansas State Department of Education provides additional information.
Additionally, on Dec. 10, 2019 the Olathe Public Schools held an information session about dyslexia. Parents unable to attend the session, can view important information from the event in this PDF.
