10-2-20 — October 2020 Board Meeting Review
Oct. 2, 2020 ~ The single presentation during the Olathe Public Schools Board of Education meeting Oct. 1 focused on updates to the district’s return to learning plan.
Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services Brent Yeager updated the board regarding recent initiatives to support parents and guardians during remote learning. Yeager also discussed changes to the remote learning mode based on feedback from families and staff members while researching best practices from across the nation.
Assistant Superintendent for High School Clint Albers and Assistant Superintendent for Middle School Sarah Guerrero provided the board information regarding a proposed hybrid schedule for middle and high school students.
Albers informed the board of the proposal for an alphabetically split, AM/PM hybrid attendance model for high school students. This model would provide daily in-person instruction for students and limit the number of students in the building to help enforce health protocols.
Guerrero informed the board of the proposal for an alphabetically split, ABAB hybrid attendance model for middle school students. This model would not change the schedule of remote learners. This model would limit the number of students in the building to help enforce health protocols. When students are not on-site, students will still have daily check-ins with teachers and will work on independent learning activities. Santa Fe Trail Middle School will follow a different schedule due to the Kansas Redesign. Communication will be provided to SFT families regarding the differences.
Before reviewing the gating criteria, Superintendent John Allison provided information to the board about the timeline and processes the district has implemented since the beginning of the pandemic. Allison led a discussion regarding four gating criteria, many of which, had been developed following the board’s decision to follow the JCDHE’s gating criteria in August.
A decision would be made in the next week regarding learning mode beginning Oct. 19.

In other business, the board:
- Approved a consent agenda including meeting minutes, financial and accounts payable reports, Human Resources report, curriculum revisions for business courses, curriculum adoption for Human Geography, and board policy revisions.
- Approved an agreement with Ad Astra Government Relations LLC to assist the district in pursuing its government relations goals including the board of education’s legislative positions.
- Approved the purchase of Informacast licensing through a Singlewire license subscription. (capital outlay funds)
- Approved the annual maintenance and licensing for OnBase imaging system. (capital outlay)
- Approved the expenditure of funds for armored car services for cash pick up services at multiple locations in the district. (general fund)
- Approved the purchase and installation of replacement playground equipment at Washington Elementary School. (capital outlay and Washington Elementary PTO funds)
- Reviewed the gating criteria (guidance for reopening schools) from various health departments. The board voted to follow the Oct. 1 revised Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) gating criteria for learning mode decisions with the addition of the absentee metric from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) gating criteria. All metrics will be weighed equally.
- Voted the allowance of the superintendent with consultation of the board to make changes to the learning mode based on data from the JCDHE gating criteria.
- Reviewed the restrictions and remediation adjustments made to allow activities and high school athletics. The board declined to make changes.
- Received information on future action items including Kansas Association of School Boards convention delegate appointment, special meeting date for a study/focus session, seventh-grade geography curriculum revision, interlocal agreement with Johnson County, bids for wireless switching equipment, mechanical engineering proposal for summer 2021 projects, roofing consultant proposal for summer 2021 projects, and bids for several on-call services.
- Received the Head Start director’s monthly written report.
