11-15-21 — Olathe South Hosts Visitor from Germany

Nov. 15, 2021 ~ Jan-Friso Heeren visited Olathe South High School for a day because of the “German for Hire” program sponsored by the Goethe-Institute, which gives middle and high school teachers the opportunity to invite German university students into their classrooms to give youth-oriented presentations on different topics in modern German life and culture.

Scott Seeger, Olathe South German teacher, applied for the program to help his students look beyond the four walls of the classroom.

“It was so great to be able to invite Jan-Friso to South and to get his perspectives on students' questions," Seeger said. "It was as if a new, fresh wind blew for a day through our German classes; students were reenergized and excited to hear about the world outside Olathe.”

Heeren is serving as an intern at the Goethe Institute - Chicago and is also an education student in Germany majoring in English, Chemistry, and Physical Education. He was thrilled to present in the German classes as well as observe the AP Chemistry and AP English classes.

“Everybody gave me a warm welcome and seemed to enjoy my presentations. All of the students were kind and interested in the German language,” Heeren said. “I simply wanted the students to have a good time, show the students some information on contemporary German culture, and for them to learn something. And I think they did.”
