Sept. 21, 2023 ~ Olathe Public Schools staff work hard to give students the resources they need to have a successful future. For some of these students, their future is working for the district where they graduated! That’s the case for Trenton Scott, an Olathe West High School class of 2021 alumnus who now works as an audio visual technician at the Technology Support Center.
“The community that we have, the benefits that you can get and the challenges that come with it make my position fun,” Scott said. “Seeing all my teachers from my classes and helping them, it’s kind of like giving back to them in some way.”
Scott was a student at Olathe Public Schools since first grade, having attended Clearwater Creek Elementary School, Oregon Trail Middle School and Olathe West High School. He found interest in video production while at Olathe West, getting highly involved in “Odub TV,” which is their video broadcasting class. From filming highlights at athletic events to helping broadcast live games, Scott worked hard to learn the technological side of how things work in broadcasting and video production.
“There literally was no job he was not willing to tackle,” Olathe West Principal Jay Novacek said. “Trenton’s work ethic is what made him stand out most of all during his time as an Owl.”
Scott worked closely with his video production teacher, Doug Kapeller, who currently serves as the director of innovation and career pathways for Olathe Public Schools. Kapeller noticed Scott's passion and work ethic and eventually was the one to recommend a job opportunity with the district.
“He assisted with everything while he was at West, even doing football broadcasts after he graduated,” Kapeller said. “He was such a great student, and I was super excited to connect him to this job in Olathe.”
Scott is just one example of Olathe Public Schools preparing students for their future.
“He’s just a hard worker,” Chief Technology Officer Josh Umphrey said. “He had done a lot of awesome stuff at West, and when we saw he wanted to work for the district we knew it would translate over nicely.”
