9-15-23 — School Start/End Time Committee Hosts First Meeting
Sept. 15, 2023 ~ On Tuesday, Sept. 12, Olathe Public Schools hosted more than 125 parents, teachers, administrators, certified and classified staff members at its first of three committee meetings this fall as we continue our work to identify modified start/end times for the 2024-25 school year.
These committees are representative of the district’s three grade levels (early childhood/elementary, middle and high school) and have been tasked with reviewing new start/end time schedule options, assessing survey feedback and diving into the challenges and opportunities each schedule presents to help identify a schedule recommendation and implementation plan to present to the Board of Education for consideration this semester.
This initial meeting provided a comprehensive overview of the work completed last year around potential changes to start and end times, including an overview of the challenges facing the district, a review of student, staff and parent feedback, an overview of the 20 different schedule options considered last year, transportation interventions put in place for the current school year, and an overview of the committee’s work moving forward.
At the next meeting, committee members will break out into three different groups by level and will focus on reviewing staff and parent survey feedback from an online survey to be sent to families Sept. 18-22. They will also begin discussions around possible challenges and solutions each schedule could present at their various levels.
