8-2-19 — Schultz Takes Oath to Join Board

Aug. 2, 2019 ~ Kristin Schultz took the oath of office with the Olathe Board of Education during the organization’s Aug. 1 meeting. The board appointed Schultz, following an application and interview process, to complete the term of Amy Martin who moved out of the district in July. Schultz will serve through Jan. 3, 2022.

Recognitions:

  • Bryan Ibarra-Ortiz of Olathe South High School earned first place in the Job Skill Demonstration Open category of the national SkillsUSA competition.
  • Tristin Gibbins of Olathe East High School earned third place in the Job Skill Demonstration A category of the national SkillsUSA.
  • The Community Service Team of Adiedra Cullors (Olathe North High School), Jaxon Harris (Olathe South) and T.J. Kinkade (Olathe Northwest High School) took first place in the national SkillsUSA event.
  • The Chapter Display Team of Hezekiah Newman (Olathe East), Luke Robinson (Olathe South) and Damian Tolbert (Olathe South) took first place in the national SkillsUSA event.
  • The Teamworks team of Dakota Broers (Olathe South), Will Eagan (Olathe East), Gauge Kellogg (Olathe West High School) and Troye Johnson (Kansas School for the Deaf) earned first place at the national SkillsUSA event.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved a consent agenda of meeting minutes, reports, and the 2019-24 professional development plan.
  • Approved an agreement with the City of Olathe for a police resource instructor for the 21st Century Public Safety Academy for the 2019-20 school year. (cost shared by city and district)
  • Approved the annual renewal of the district’s online subscription database Discovery Education for the 2019-20 school year. (library media department budget)
  • Approved the purchase of online subscriptions for Rosetta Stone as a resource for the district’s newcomer English Language Learner program. (Learning Services textbook budget)
  • Approved the annual renewal of the district’s online subscription database ABC-CLIO for the 2019-20 school year. (library media and social studies department budgets)
  • Approved the purchase of online assessments for Career and Technical Education programs and related 21st Century Academies. (textbook / instructional materials budget and Perkins grant)
  • Approved the purchase of three commercial sprayer/spreaders to reduce the cost of overtime hours. (capital outlay)
  • Approved the purchase of replacement playground equipment at Pleasant Ridge Elementary School. (capital outlay)
  • Approved trade bids for this fall’s heating, ventilation, air conditioning projects at Olathe East High School and Oregon Trail Middle School. (capital outlay)
  • Approved the payment of consulting fees to E-Rate Solutions for filing regulatory paperwork with the Federal Communications Commission. (general fund)
  • Approved the expenditure of funds for annual asphalt and concrete projects. (capital outlay)
  • Approved the purchase of replacement digital camera equipment and accessories for the high school fine arts programs. (capital outlay)
  • Approved the purchase of subscription and licensing support for Adobe Creative Cloud. (general fund)
  • Approved the multi-year renewal of plagiarism prevention and originality checking online services through Turnitin. (general fund)
  • Approved the purchase of replacement classroom furniture for Olathe North High School. (capital outlay)
  • Approved the board’s 2019-20 committee and site council assignments.
  • Approved the notice of hearing publication for the 2019-20 budget hearing to take place at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22.
  • Approved a special meeting following the Aug. 22 budget hearing to make final modifications and approve the state budget documents for certification.
  • Received information on future action items including student trips, curriculum, Education Center interior renovation project bids, licensing for imaging software, bids for phone replacements, and commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Held an executive session to consult with its attorney, and a separate executive session to discuss employer-employee negotiations. After returning from executive session, the board approved a tentative negotiated agreement for 2019-20 as well as salary and benefits for 2020-21.
