2-26-25 — Adjustments to 2024-25 Calendar Due to Inclement Weather Days
Feb. 26, 2025 ~ After experiencing a historic winter season and an unprecedented number of inclement weather days, Olathe Public Schools will be making necessary adjustments to the remaining school year calendar to ensure that we meet the state required instructional hours for all students. Olathe Public Schools is committed to prioritizing instructional time and values having our students in school.
The State Board of Education requires that all students meet the mandatory 1116 hours, except for seniors who must have 1086 hours. To put the district in the best position to meet these requirements, while also maintaining our community’s longstanding priority to end the school year by Memorial Day, the following changes will be made, effective following Spring Break:
- Changes for All Students
- March 24, April 24, April 25 – These scheduled professional development days will now be full school days for all students.
- Changes for Elementary School Students
- Extend the school day by 5 minutes: Effective March 24, 2025, elementary school will be held from 8:55 a.m. - 4 p.m. Information regarding the A-D schedule will be shared at a later time.
- Changes for Middle School Students
- Extend the school day by 5 minutes: Middle school will be held from 8:20 a.m.-3:25 p.m.
- Changes for High School Students
- Extend the school day by 10 minutes: Effective March 24, 2025, high school will be held from 7:40 a.m.-2:50 p.m.
- Eliminate high school late starts: Following spring break, there will be no Thursday late starts at the high school level and students will attend school for a full day, with classes beginning at 7:40 a.m.
- Full-Day on May 21 (grades 9-11) – This finals day for students in grades 9-11 will now be a full-day instead of a half-day
While these adjustments will help address the impact of inclement weather on instructional minutes thus far, please know that if additional inclement weather closures or delays occur, the district will need to look at making up time on May 22 and/or May 23 to address the impact of any additional closures.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigated an unprecedented winter season. If you have any questions regarding the changes to the schedule listed above, please contact your building principal.
