10-9-18 — Five Outstanding Individuals Inducted to Alumni Wall of Honor

Oct. 9, 2018 ~ More than 70 alums of the Olathe School District have been recognized in a fall tradition known as the Olathe Public Schools Alumni Association Wall of Honor banquet. They are joined by a total of nine Distinguished Persons of Honor, current or former district staff who are outstanding because of their lifetime achievements.

The 2018 banquet and induction occurred Oct. 3 and recognized three alums and two Distinguished Persons of Honor. The first award ceremony took place in 2007.

This year's inductees were:

  • Carlotta Dorst Belcher, community volunteer, John P. St. John Memorial High School Class of 1952
  • LeRoy O. Homan, serviceman and national security specialist, John P. St. John Memorial High School Class of 1955
  • Ken Roberts, longtime Olathe principal and community volunteer, Olathe High School Class of 1963

Former Olathe Public Schools superintendent Patricia All and district/Olathe historian Bob Courtney received the Distinguished Person of Honor Award.

The honorees thanked a variety of people who positively impacted their lives, from teachers to family and friends. One recalled the days when Olathe had only three elementary schools; another reflected on the much-needed opening of new schools due to overcrowding.

“Olathe alums are proud of their roots,” Community Liaison and Olathe South High School alum Heather Schoonover told the audience. “Olathe teachers, administrators and support staff strive to support students so graduates will soar into the future on wings of hope and success.

“It is important to reflect and appreciate those who impacted our education,” Schoonover added. “Was it a coach, teacher, family member or the lunch room lady who said hello each day? Tonight we have seen the impact that three alumni and two staff members made.”

She encouraged audience members to consider nominating someone for the 2019 Wall of Honor.

In addition to this special community event, the inductees were recognized at the Oct. 4 Olathe Board of Education meeting.

The Olathe Public Schools Alumni Association is active in many ways throughout the year: overseeing a coat drive for district students in transition, maintaining multiple scholarships for Olathe graduates, and helping reunion organizers by providing contact information for alums. The group also installed a pictorial timeline of the district's history in the Education Center at 14160 S. Black Bob Road, Olathe.
