9-4-18 — Suicide Prevention, Literacy Among Presentations to Board of Education
Sept. 4, 2018 ~ The Olathe Board of Education will hold its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Education Center, 14160 S. Black Bob, Olathe.
Beginning at 6 p.m., the board will recognize several individuals for their accomplishments. A large group of Volunteers Serving Schools members will be honored, as will an elementary teacher who recently received an award. The board will also recognize two teachers named to a master teacher fellowship class.
The board will hear two presentations: suicide prevention curriculum and literacy grant.
College and Career Curriculum Coordinator Angie Salava and Assistant Superintendent of Support Services Jessica Dain will share details of a suicide prevention curriculum that will be implemented in all Olathe high schools this year.
Assistant Superintendent for Learning Services Brent Yeager will review the district’s initiatives on literacy development as part of a Kansas LiNK grant.
The consent agenda of routine action items will be followed by a handful of bids, contracts and agreements. These include the legislative liaison contract, lease of vans for high schools, phone replacements, additional parking at Summit Trail Middle School, and security and surveillance system for Canyon Creek Elementary School.
Real estate transactions are also on the board’s agenda. Board members will hold an executive session to discuss the potential purchase of a future school site. The board will also consider selling two pieces of property. One, on Lakeshore Drive, is close to another parcel of land the district plans to use for a future elementary school. The second piece of property being considered for sale is at 116th Street and Renner Boulevard, and no longer needed because of the lack of enrollment growth in that area.
Several future action items will come before the board this month. They include student trips, curriculum, the schedule for fall HVAC replacement projects, and bids for table saws with enhanced safety features for middle schools.
The board will receive two written reports: facility usage annual report and Head Start director’s monthly report.
An executive session is planned to discuss employer-employee negotiations.
The complete agenda and supporting documents can be found on BoardDocs.
