5-31-18 — Students May Earn College Credit Through Summer Exam
May 31, 2018 ~ High school students in the Olathe Public Schools may take the College-Level Examination Program exam this summer to demonstrate their mastery of introductory college-level material and earn college credit. Students can earn credit for what they already know by getting qualifying scores on any of 33 examinations.
College Board’s College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) has been in existence for over 40 years and is accepted by over 2,900 college and universities. Exams correspond to one-semester courses and are reviewed by faculty across the country to ensure that they cover the material taught in the corresponding college courses.
Olathe School District will offer CLEP exams in financial accounting, information systems, introductory business law, principles of management, and principles of marketing at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 28 at the district’s Technology Support Center, 14250 S. Black Bob Road, Olathe. The cost of the exam is $95 (make check payable to Olathe Public Schools) and students can sign up by contacting Assessment Director Rich Wilson at 913-780-8162 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
A score of 50 (out of 80) on the CLEP exams will ensure college credit for students at Kansas State University, the University of Kansas, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University, Wichita State University and Washburn University. CLEP is also accepted at many other regional schools. Students are encouraged to check each university’s website for more details about CLEP and AP qualifying scores.
Because the CLEP exams are essentially college-level finals, content from a high school class may only cover part of the exam content. Students may want to seek other resources to extend what they learned in high school.
The official CLEP website for the business offerings provides overviews of each course. Click on an exam for an opportunity to purchase the CLEP Examination Guide ($10) and/or the 2018 CLEP Official Study Guide ($24.99).
Modern States is a College Board/CLEP-approved website that offers free courses in preparation for the CLEP test. Students who take these courses will see material covered in high school, as well as new material that would be covered in college. To receive credit, the student must pass the CLEP Exam with a 50 (out of 80).
