3-30-18 — Meadow Lane Donation Helps Heart to Heart
March 30, 2018 ~ Fifth-grade students at Meadow Lane Elementary were moved by the impact of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria that affected students and families across the world earlier in the 2017-18 school year. More than anything, students wanted to learn how they could help.
Teacher Betsy Prestridge reached out to a friend who works at Heart to Heart International and invited her to come share with students how her organization helps out when natural disasters occur. As the school year progressed, a group of 19 fifth-graders decided that raising money for Heart to Heart would be an excellent way to lend a helping hand to those affected by natural disasters. Over lunch meetings, these students brainstormed plans for a fundraiser.
Through posters, fliers, morning announcements, video commercials for the school community and spirit days, students raised awareness of the fundraiser. During the week of the February parent-teacher conferences, students collected $1,064.
In late March, students invited Heart to Heart to Meadow Lane for a check presentation. In addition, students wanted to continue their efforts and packed hygiene kits and learned about how their money will go to help others in need. After the presentation, students were able to tour Heart to Heart’s mobile medical unit.
“I am so proud of our students learning about community service and empathy while they set and accomplished goals in a real-life situation,” said Mary Williams, Meadow Lane fifth-grade teacher. “How empowering for students to learn how an idea and hard work can make a difference in the world!”
