Student and Community Engagement

The Spot is a free after-school program for students in grades 6 through 12, hosted in partnership with various community partners including Olathe Public Schools, Olathe Public Library, Johnson County Mental Health, Johnson County Department of Corrections, Drug Enforcement Administration, Olathe Fire Department and Olathe Police Department. This program offers homework support, mentorship, snacks, and a fun and safe environment for students to play and socialize with their peers.

Amenities include snacks, arcade-style games, pool tables, ping-pong tables, a game room with e-sports (including gaming systems PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One), and an outdoor recreation space.

Open from 3-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Thursdays at the Olathe Advanced Technical Center, 611 N. Nelson Road, Olathe KS 66061, through May 14. Open to all Olathe Public Schools middle and high school students. No registration required.

The Olathe chapter of the Leadership Lowrider Bike Club was established in 2017. The mission is to help students in high school find a sense of belonging and support both socially and academically. This program allows students to receive weekly mentoring, academic support, community service, and leadership development through the art community, all while building custom bikes that they earn upon high school graduation.

Since the club’s inception, 400 bikes have been donated to the community, and over 1,500 elementary students have been supported through one-on-one mentoring and all-school assemblies. Students within the program have achieved a 100% graduation rate.

The Leadership Lowrider Bike Club works closely with law enforcement, city officials, and local partners to foster community engagement and help students develop their leadership skills. In collaboration with the Olathe Police Department and student members, the club has designed custom bikes, provided mentorship, and customized a lowrider police car. The chapter also partners with local art museums to display various custom bikes, including a tricycle designed for the Olathe Fire Department and a piece at the Johnson County Museum.

Our bike club now has chapters at four Olathe middle schools (Indian Trail, Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, and Pioneer Trail) as well as chapters nationally in Kansas City, San Diego, Albuquerque, Española, Pueblo (Colorado), Four Corners (New Mexico), and the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center.

The Lowrider Bike Club meets Mondays from 3-5 p.m. at Olathe Advanced Technical Center, 611 N. Nelson Road, Olathe, KS 66061, through the May 11 senior send-off. It is open to all Olathe Public Schools high school students. No registration is required.

Since 1967, the Kansas Title I, Part C Education Program has worked to ensure that eligible children receive the same free public education as their peers. The program helps minimize educational disruptions and other challenges caused by frequent moves by providing targeted support and resources.

As part of the Kansas State Department of Education, the Kansas Title I, Part C Education Program is federally funded under Title I, Part C of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Local agencies, known as “projects,” identify and recruit eligible children throughout the state and are responsible for delivering the educational services and support they need to succeed.

Title I, Part C students often experience unique challenges that can impact their education, such as frequent school disruptions, gaps in academic records, language and cultural barriers, and social isolation. These obstacles can make it difficult for them to stay on track academically, emphasizing the need for specialized support and resources to help them succeed.
