Safety Services

In Olathe Public Schools, the safety and security of our students, staff and visitors is a top priority. The Safety Services department has implemented a wide variety of programs and tools across the district to support this initiative.

One of our greatest assets in safety is the trusted staff members in our buildings. Our Safety Services department works in partnership with the City of Olathe and Olathe Police Department to ensure there is a School Resource Officer (SRO) in each high school, middle school and alternative education site. Elementary schools are served by the Olathe Police Department Patrol Division as well as our safety specialists. Finally, our co-responder helps serve alongside our administrators and members of the Safety Services team to support the mental health and wellbeing of our students, staff, families, community members and visitors in times of crisis.

If you have questions for the Safety Services team, please call 913-780-7000.

Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

The safety and wellbeing of students and staff is a top priority in Olathe Public Schools. The district uses a safety response system known as “Standard Response Protocol,” or SRP – an “all hazard” approach used nationwide to respond to a variety of emergency situations.

SRP uses clear, common language for a simplified crisis response plan. It is based on five standardized actions:

  • Hold – keep hallways clear
  • Secure – bring students and staff inside the building
  • Lockdown – secure rooms and remain quiet
  • Evacuate – move to a different location
  • Shelter – protect from a specific threat or hazard

SRP emphasizes quickly locking down in response to critical incidents and complements our existing safety tools, including the Centegix CrisisAlert system and Nightlock door locks. By using SRP, our district ensures everyone knows how to respond—no matter where they are—during an emergency.

SRP was developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation and was created through the research-based best practices of school administrators, psychologists, public space safety experts, families, and first responders. For more information about SRP, visit the Standard Response Protocol website.

Secure Weapon Storage

We recognize the importance of fostering a safe environment for all students, both in and out of school. Secure weapon storage is one of many factors that contribute to this shared goal of safety. One valuable resource is the Be SMART program:

  • Secure all guns in your home and vehicles.
  • Model responsible behavior around firearms.
  • Ask about unsecured guns in other homes.
  • Recognize the risks of teen suicide.
  • Tell your peers to be SMART.

District Builds Upon Safety Protocols

The Olathe Public Schools uses many different tools to ensure the safety and security of our students, staff, and visitors to our buildings. This multi-layered and comprehensive approach to safety is essential in ensuring a safe and orderly learning environment.
