Welcome to Fine Arts

High School student playing a trombone

From the first note to the final performance, students experience the joy of making music together, with numerous opportunities to showcase their talents throughout the year. We believe every student deserves the chance to play, perform, and grow through music regardless of financial circumstances. Families needing support with instrument access are encouraged to connect with their child’s band or orchestra teacher to learn about available resources.

Olathe Public Schools received the 2025 Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation (National Association of Music Merchants) in recognition of its outstanding commitment to music education! As part of the selection process, the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas reviewed factors such as funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, program support, and community music-making opportunities. Olathe Public Schools also earned this distinction in 2006, 2015, 2023, and 2024.

View calendars of the various performances, organized by high school feeder pattern. Efforts are made to keep these calendars updated, but it is always a good idea to check with individual schools to confirm performance information.

Fifth Grade Instrumental Music

5th Grade student playing the violin

During instrument counseling, fifth graders have the opportunity to try band and orchestra instruments or mouthpieces. Parents may also attend a "Meet the Instruments" event at an Olathe high school; a great opportunity to see, hold, and hear the instruments being played. Information about obtaining instruments from local vendors is available at "Meet the Instruments" events.
