How do we request a developmental screening (including speech and language concerns)?

If you suspect your child has a developmental delay, the district can complete a developmental screening at no cost to you. Screenings include developmental testing for all areas (cognition, motor, social, communication, and adaptive). The Olathe Public Schools conducts free developmental screenings for all children who reside in the district ages 3-5 years (not eligible for kindergarten) when there are concerns about the child's development in one or more of the following areas:

Large and small motor movements
Speech and language
Self-help skills
Early learning skills
Behavior and social
Hearing and vision

Screenings are held at Harmony and Heartland early childhood centers throughout the school year. Parents who have concerns about the development of their child should complete the information below and they will be contacted to schedule a preschool screening. Note: A screening is not required to apply for preschool. Only parents with concerns about their child’s development should schedule a screening. I have applied for an early childhood spot for my child. How do I check on the status of my application?

Once an application is submitted online, families will receive an email confirmation that the application was received. Families will be contacted by May 1st if their child is selected for an early childhood classroom. Head Start enrollment confirmations will be provided to families by June 1st. Families not contacted by these dates will be placed on our waiting lists.

Where are the early childhood classrooms located?

Early childhood classrooms are located at Harmony Early Childhood Center and Heartland Early Childhood Center. In addition, the following elementary schools host an early childhood program: Bentwood, Brougham, Briarwood, Canyon Creek, Fairview, Forest View, Heatherstone, Heritage, Mahaffie, Madison Place, Millbrooke, Pleasant Ridge, Rolling Ridge, Ridgeview, Scarbrough, Tomahawk and Walnut Grove.

Is a developmental screening required as part of the preschool application process?

Pick Up and Drop Off Procedures

As you approach the pick-up and drop-off area, you will notice a set of lines painted across the drive. This is a crosswalk. You must stop and only proceed to the loading area if there is space for you to do so without blocking the circle drive exit. Only three cars at a time are allowed in the loading/drop off area. The first car in line should pull up as far as possible without blocking the first parking space. Please do not go around these cars and stop (double park) to pick up your child.

If you are in line, do not leave your car and come get your child. Children will only be loaded and/or unloaded in the appropriate area by traffic control staff. Teachers will start bringing out the students who ride in cars at 11:20 a.m. for the morning session, and 3:30 p.m. for the afternoon session. If you need to drop off or pick up your child earlier or later than the normal loading and unloading time or you need to visit with a staff member, you must park your car in a parking spot in the lot and come into the building.

Remember you will be blocking traffic if your car is parked in line. Also never back up in line. Please wait until the car in front has moved up and you can then proceed safely following the white arrows painted on the pavement throughout the parking lot.
