Who We Are
Located at Olathe North High School, students in the Sports Medicine and Exercise Science Four-Year Academy discover the science behind human movement and athletic performance while developing skills to assist injured athletes. They explore a variety of health career fields through coursework, shadowships, projects, and internships, and gain valuable experience by mentoring with a certified athletic trainer. Students also assist in the assessment of athletic injuries on the field and in rehabilitation within a well-equipped training facility. Additionally, they learn to measure cardiovascular fitness on a treadmill using a VO2 Max computer, building both knowledge and hands-on expertise in the field.
What We Do
Students will gain real-world experience maintaining and working in a fully equipped athletic training room, as well as opportunities to conduct exercise research in the kinesiology lab. They participate in hands-on experiences such as taping and wrapping for sports injuries, first aid, emergency care, injury rehabilitation, and the use of therapeutic exercises and modalities. The program offers opportunities for travel to competitions, exhibits, and college visits, while providing clinical field experience with industry professionals, including physical therapists, strength coaches, physical educators, nutritionists, and paramedics. Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn five hours of college credit through EMR courses, alongside other AP or college-level coursework.

Endorsement Requirements and Sample Plan of Study
The endorsement requirements provided in the documents below gives the requirements for achieving an endorsement at one of three levels: Endorse, Endorse with Honors, or Endorse with High Honors
Students will set goals with their academy facilitator and their IPS will reflect their plan. Students can design their IPS and endorsement goals based on their individual needs. Students can move from one level to another as they need to. The student's plan is re-visted each year to make sure the student is on track and their plan still reflects their interest.
The Four-Year Individual Plan of Study (IPS) provided in the document list below is a SAMPLE. Each student's IPS is individualized to the student's needs and interests. The academy facilitator will work with the student along with their school counselor.
