Who We Are
Located at Olathe North High School, academically high-achieving students in this program immerse themselves in rigorous, non-traditional coursework that goes beyond the traditional classroom experience. Beginning with a freshman cohort, students explore academic disciplines and develop cultural awareness before specializing in one of five content areas: Language Arts, Math, Political Science, Science, or Visual Arts. They think and work outside the traditional academic “box,” examining global issues through multiple curricular viewpoints while learning directly from experts in their fields of study. Students participate in unique field research, receive specialized preparation for the PSAT/NMSQT, and compete in local, regional, and national academic competitions. With access to advanced technology and resources tailored to their areas of study, they dive into topics that exceed even the most rigorous high school courses. Many go on to pursue post-graduate degrees, entering higher education well-prepared for the challenges of undergraduate and graduate work across a wide range of academic disciplines.
What We Do in the Distinguished Scholars Science Strand
This program offers advanced scientific content and authentic STEM experiences that go far beyond standard coursework. Students explore the historical development of science and its impact on society while diving into high-level topics such as introductory organic chemistry, advanced physics, and sophisticated laboratory techniques. With access to professional-grade equipment typically reserved for college-level study, they engage in inquiry-based research that mirrors real laboratory work and connect with STEM experts for valuable real-world insights. Students also participate in academic competitions at the local, regional, and national levels, gaining hands-on experience and developing the skills needed for success in postsecondary education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and medicine.

Endorsement Requirements and Sample Plan of Study
The endorsement requirements provided in the documents below gives the requirements for achieving an endorsement at one of three levels: Endorse, Endorse with Honors, or Endorse with High Honors
Students will set goals with their academy facilitator and their IPS will reflect their plan. Students can design their IPS and endorsement goals based on their individual needs. Students can move from one level to another as they need to. The student's plan is re-visted each year to make sure the student is on track and their plan still reflects their interest.
The Four-Year Individual Plan of Study (IPS) provided in the document list below is a SAMPLE. Each student's IPS is individualized to the student's needs and interests. The academy facilitator will work with the student along with their school counselor.
