Who We Are
The BioMedical Engineering Academy sits at the crossroads of medicine and engineering, designed for students who are passionate about creating solutions to improve human health. Over the course of four years, students participate in specialized, hands-on classes that blend science, technology, and problem-solving. They dive into a wide range of biomedical topics including prosthetics, heart valves and replacements, drug delivery systems, medical sensors created with tools like 3D printing and Arduinos, bioethics, and the biomechanics of injuries and treatments. Students also learn human anatomy and engineering design while working in collaborative teams to address real-world health care challenges, such as designing surgical instruments, developing implantable medical devices, or creating equipment to support individuals with disabilities.
The program emphasizes creativity, resilience, and teamwork, encouraging students to think critically, work with their hands to build models and products, and manage projects effectively. By engaging with multiple engineering disciplines alongside medical applications, students not only strengthen technical skills but also prepare for a wide variety of future pathways. Graduates leave the Academy well-prepared for careers in medicine, orthopedic surgery, nursing, bioimaging, pharmacy, chemical and mechanical engineering, physical therapy, and bioengineering.
What We Do
Located at Olathe South High School the BioMedical Engineering Academy emphasizes a collaborative, team-based approach to learning across all courses. Students engage in hands-on experiences such as model building and designing or modifying medical products. They also have the opportunity to connect with industry leaders, medical professionals, research students, and university professors, expanding their knowledge and professional networks. In addition, students gain valuable real-world insights through field trips to research hospitals, universities, and biomedical companies, offering a deeper understanding of the biomedical engineering field.

Endorsement Requirements and Sample Plan of Study
The endorsement requirements provided in the documents below gives the requirements for achieving an endorsement at one of three levels: Endorse, Endorse with Honors, or Endorse with High Honors
Students will set goals with their academy facilitator and their IPS will reflect their plan. Students can design their IPS and endorsement goals based on their individual needs. Students can move from one level to another as they need to. The student's plan is re-visted each year to make sure the student is on track and their plan still reflects their interest.
The Four-Year Individual Plan of Study (IPS) provided in the document list below is a SAMPLE. Each student's IPS is individualized to the student's needs and interests. The academy facilitator will work with the student along with their school counselor.
