District recognizes Garmin partnerships

  • February 2020 ~ Olathe Public Schools Board of Education recognized Garmin International at the board meeting on February 7, 2020. Garmin has long-standing and broad reaching initiatives that have benefited Olathe students, staff and families including sponsoring the electronics lab for the CTE Aviation Electronics program located at West Dennis Learning Center. The parntership with the school district has a positive impact on the local community.

Olathe Student Awarded for Information Technology

  • January 2020 ~ Olathe Northwest High School Senior Kaela Amundson was selected as the winner for the Western Missouri and Kansas Affiliate Award for Aspirations in Computing from the National Center for Women in Information Technology. Amundson will be honored in late February at an award ceremony held at Johnson County Community College.

    Olathe Northwest freshman Alana Schmalzried-Lugo was named honorable mention.

    “As a district, we are beyond proud of these two students for their recognition,” Olathe Public Schools Superintendent for Learning Services Brent Yeager said. “They are an example of what our students can accomplish and the impact women are making in the area of technology.”

Avionics Takes Flight in the Classroom

  • December 2019 ~ In November 2018, the Olathe School District approved a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) career pathway. Following in-depth planning and creating an industry-standard work lab,
    Aviation Electronics (avionics) made its debut in August 2019 at the West Dennis Support Center.

    Partnered with Garmin International, a global leader in technology, students have the opportunity to learn and develop avionic industry skills in a state-of-the-art lab furnished by Garmin with the same equipment that the company uses in its manufacturing department.

Technology Students Shine at All Competition Levels

  • Nov. 20, 2019 ~ About 220 competitive young scientists, technology wizards, engineers and mathematicians gathered recently for the 14th annual Olathe TSA regionals at Olathe West High School. TSA (Technology Student Association) is a national organization for students enrolled in any STEM-related course.

    “This was the largest number of participants at an Olathe regional,” said Kevin Hulsen, industrial technology teacher at Olathe West High School. He and fellow teacher John McDonald advise the West team and organized this year’s regional that included 21 events ranging from technical sketching to structural engineering, flight endurance to dragster design, and more. All five Olathe high schools, six Olathe middle schools and two Blue Valley high schools participated.

Top Kansas Career and Technical Education Scholars Recognized

  • The Kansas CTE Scholar program is an opportunity to recognize well-rounded outstanding CTE students who are finishing their senior year of high school.

    Students have to be a high school senior and meet the following criteria to be selected as a scholar:

    • Have earned or presently enrolled in 3.0 or more CTE credits.
    • Provide documentation of technical skill attainment.
    • Have a CTE Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 or better in CTE coursework.
    • Demonstrated leadership.
    • Demonstrated community engagement.
    • Have professional learning experiences.
    • Provide a career vision summary statement.

    Scholars will receive a commemorative pin, special certificate and statewide recognition.

  • April 16, 2019 ~ Thirty-nine Kansas high school seniors have been named 2019 Kansas Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholars, the Kansas State Department of Education announced April 16, 2019.
