Student Activities

  • Band

Sunnyside band teaches fifth graders to play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. We cover both note reading and the physical skills needed to play successfully. Sunnyside students continue to excel in Olathe's middle school and high school bands.

    CSI

During our sessions, fourth and fifth grade students are invited to participate in Cool Science Investigations (CSI), a science club that meets weekly before school. Each week, students engage in hands-on science investigations across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines, from chemistry to physics, biology and astronomy. One of the most popular sessions each year is Lego Robotics, which places special emphasis on engineering and robotics technology. Students work in teams to accomplish tasks, meet challenges, and satisfy their curiosity about the amazing world around them.

    District Honor Choir

Olathe School District Honor Choir consists of volunteer fifth grade members who audition to represent their school. The Honor Choir consists of representatives from each elementary school's fifth grade throughout Olathe. Honor Choir members attend special rehearsals from December through March. The Honor Choir has a concert in March.

    Math Wings

Math Wings is an after-school club comprised of fourth and fifth grade students who not only excel in mathematics, but also love the challenge of competition. The weekly meetings consist of intense mental math skills, problem solving competitions, vocabulary review, and math scrimmages. Student teams, three per team, represent Sunnyside at three regional competitions held in October, January, and April. Teams who place first, second, or third at the regional competitions advance to a district competition against all Olathe elementary schools.

    Presidential Service

Sunnyside Presidential Service Club offers students an opportunity to help their community, nation and world in various types of projects with their families, other interest groups or in planned after-school club projects. Help out once or more often . . . how much time a student volunteers is up to their individual interest and schedules.

    Sunnyside Singers (Special Chorus)

The Sunnyside Singers is a singing ensemble open to any fourth or fifth grade students who want to share their amazing vocal talents! Joining the choir is a fun way to make new friends, share your voice, and create amazing music together. Rehearsals typically begin in mid-September and finish in early May. We perform a winter concert, a spring concert, and we go on a spring choir tour field trip where we share our music with our community.
